There are not rare cases, in technology, of innovations in terms of accessibility, which open the way to the use of devices for those who, due to physical problems, could not make use of them. Often, this is expressed in software solutions, but not always. Recently, after a year of development with prototypes, the Honkongian brand 8BitDo, specialized in gaming accessories, announced the imminent arrival on the market of the new Bluetooth Lite SE controller, suitable for people with motor disabilities.

The new 8BitDo Lite SE controller is the result of the collaboration between Andreas Karlsson, a Swedish dad who for a long time tried to build controllers for his son Oskar, who suffers from type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, and Weiling Li, head designer and co – founder of 8BitDo, with the aim of creating an accessory that would open up the world of gaming, where everything is possible, even to people who, due to physical problems, find themselves having to deal with what their body allows or does not allow every day Do.

The result has materialized in the Lite SE controller, similar to a 2019 model (the 8BitDo Lite), but without the triggers or bumper buttons, difficult to press in some debilitating pathologies of the musculature, replaced by normal front buttons L1, L2, R1 and R2: instead of relying on the common analog sticks, L3 and R3 are expressed with their own buttons and, in addition, a greater sensitivity has been adopted for all the implemented buttons.

On the back, there is an anti-slip mat, useful when using the Lite SE, also prepared with motion sensors and a vibrational motor, placed on a surface: autonomy, estimated at a maximum of 18 hours, is ensured. from the insertion of a tiny lithium battery.

At the moment, it is not clear whether the controller in question, compatible with Android devices and the Nintendo Switch console, also supports other platforms (the company has not yet responded to this to TheVerge) and if, like other 8BitDo controllers , also supports customization and button mapping. To date, the 8BitDo Lite SE can be pre-ordered on the brand’s store, with shipments from 15 July, at a price of 33.50 euros.
