According to what was stated by Elon Muskhis startup xAI it is intended to yield Grok a project open source.

The statements on chatbot in question appear to be connected to the recent court summons of OpenAI by the entrepreneur of South African origins. On this occasion, Musk complained about how the company is run by Sam Altman has distanced itself from its open source roots.

It should be remembered how the entrepreneur participated in the foundation of OpenAI, supporting a project that should have been freely available to the public and which, instead, has now become de facto closed-source.

Grok, in this sense, seems to want to take the opposite path. xAI, in fact, in this way joins the large group of companies in the sector, among which it is included Mistral as well as Metawho have made the codes of their chatbots public.

Grok will be open source, following the example of Tesla patents

Elon Musk’s move is certainly nothing new, given that he is one of the most fervent supporters of the open source philosophy.

In this sense, for example, many of the patents of Tesla fall within this philosophy. Musk, during 2014, stated how “Tesla will not file patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology“.

Grok is a system based on a Large Language Model (LLM) and is advertised as a tool with direct access to X. In recent months, the chatbot has been accused of being inspired “a little too much” by the answers provided by its direct competitor, namely the aforementioned ChatGPT.

The platform was launched by xAI last November, with an initial testing phase reserved only for some selected X Premium users. Although the chatbot appeared more “immature” than the competition, the now imminent launch of Grok 1.5 should significantly reduce this gap.
