All methods to successfully suspend Windows

Suspend Windows

If we have to go away from the PC workstation for the lunch break or just for a few minutes it is better to put it in sleep mode, so as to save energy or, in the case of laptops, to increase the battery life. Sleep mode allows you to quickly resume where we left off without completely shutting down the computer – we will have all our files and programs open as before the break.

In the following chapters we will show you all methods to successfully suspend Windows, so as to be able to choose from time to time the one that best suits our suspension needs. One method does not exclude the other: we can very well prepare the PC with various suspension methods, using the fastest one or the one we prefer at that moment.

Suspend the PC with the Sleep button

Sleep button

If on our computer there is a key with the “Zz” icon or with the writing Sleep, we can use it to quickly suspend the computer without having to do anything else. To avoid accidental key presses, it is usually necessary to press FN + Sleep to properly initiate hibernation of the laptop; on fixed PCs, however, the Sleep button is usually present next to the button Stamp o Scroll lockidentified with the inscription Break time o Interr.

Is the sleep button too inconvenient to activate or is it activated by mistake? In this case it is better to deactivate the Sleep key and remap it to another key or to another keyboard shortcut, as also seen in our guide on how change keys (remap) or disable them on the computer keyboard.

Suspend PC with keyboard shortcut

Suspension shortcut

An old keyboard shortcut can also be used to quickly suspend the computer. We are talking about the shortcut ALT + F4which if performed on an empty desktop (without any window in the foreground = will open the work completion screen and allow you to select the option Suspend in the drop-down menu.

Suspend your PC from the Start menu

Menu Start

Another very simple method to properly suspend Windows involves using the Start menu. After opening the menu, press the power button and select the item Suspend. Alternatively we can also press with the right button on the Start menu, we open the menu Close or log out and select the item Suspend to properly suspend the operating system.

Suspend your PC from the command prompt

More experienced users can also initiate hibernation of the computer directly from the command prompt. To proceed we look for the command prompt in the Start menu, right click on it and press Open as administrator.

In the new window that will open, first deactivate hibernation with the command:

powercfg -h off

After launching this command we use the following command to properly suspend the PC:

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState Sleep

The method is quite inconvenient, but it can be very useful for those who often work from prompts or have to properly suspend a business PC or a computer used as a server.

Suspend the PC with a desktop icon

Suspend icon

By deactivating the hibernation (as seen in the previous chapter) we can start the hibernation of the computer by creating a custom icon on the desktop. To proceed, right-click anywhere on the desktop, select the path New -> Link and enter the following command:

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

We confirm, we choose a name for the icon (like Suspend your PC) and finally press OK. To change the icon, press the right button on it, click on Properties and then on Change iconchoosing from the predefined ones offered by Windows.

From now on, by double clicking on the icon, the computer will immediately go to sleep, without having to open any menu or without having to use a particular keyboard shortcut. To learn more we can also read our guide to keys to Shut Down Windows 10 and 11, Restart the PC and Disconnect.

Suspend your PC automatically

Automatic suspension

On Windows 10 and Windows 11 we can set the computer to automatically suspend every time it is left inactive for a certain period of time. To set the automatic suspension we open the Start menu, look for the Control Panel, let’s take the path Hardware and Sound -> Power Options and click on the item Change your computer’s sleep settings.

In the new window that will open we choose after when the computer will go to sleep, modify the drop-down menus next to the item Computer hibernation. The first drop-down menu will indicate the inactivity time required to suspend the PC on battery power, while the second drop-down menu will indicate the inactivity time required to suspend the PC when it is connected to the mains.

To obtain a good energy saving we set at least 20 minutes on a PC connected to the mains and 10 minutes for battery-powered PCs.

Conclusions

Suspending Windows PCs can be done in many different ways, ranging from simply pressing a button to shortcuts and custom icons to place on the desktop. In all cases we remind you that, if we want to get back to work from where we left it, we can simply interrupt the hibernation of Windows pressing a key on the keyboard or the power key.
