Apple Intelligence: How AI changes the way you use iPhone, iPad and Mac

The Cupertino giant closed the opening conference of the WWDC24 with the most awaited and talked about news of recent months. Apple Intelligence is the name of the suite of AI-powered features that users will be able to use on iPhone, iPad e Mac (compatible ones, of course). The most important update concerns Siri, which finally manages to be truly versatile and useful through an integration never seen before on the Californian company’s devices. And there is also the possibility to turn to ChatGPTthanks to the partnership with OpenAI now confirmed.

The Apple Intelligence suite revolutionizes everything, but it’s not for everyone

With Apple Intelligence, the company led by Tim Cook has recovered ground on Google and Microsoft? Based on what was shown during WWDC24, this seems to be the case. On iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia it will be possible to carry out operations previously only possible with Designer and similar tools, such as image creation starting from a textual prompt, the rewriting a text to adapt it to a specific context, the drafting of a textual content starting from a short description and so on.

As for writing, i Writing Tools – available in Mail, Notes, Pages and also third-party apps – will allow you to rework, revise and summarize a text. With Image Playground instead, you will be able to create images to use in conversations or applications (such as Notes, thanks to the new Image Wand tool) by choosing between different styles. Everything will happen on-device.

Thanks to artificial intelligence it will then be possible to give life to new emoji through a mix of existing ones but also using photos of friends and family. This new tool is called Genmoji and will also be compatible with the Tapback feature of Messages.

Even the system app Photo (now completely redesigned) was “hit” by the AI tornado. By leveraging artificial intelligence, users will be able to look for specific photos using natural language, while with the Clean Up tool it will be possible to remove unwanted objects from the background.

What’s new with Siri

With the advent of Apple Intelligence, the Cupertino company is talking about a “new era for Siri”. And that’s not an exaggeration. In fact, thanks to the powers of artificial intelligence, the virtual assistant – now with a graphic appearance (a light beam that flows along the profile of the display) – is able to understand language better and interact in a more personal and contextually relevant way. And you can also make requests digitandole.

Siri can answer questions about the operation of the device (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and provide advice regarding this, but it can also analyze what appears on the display to better understand the request and interact in the best possible way. The virtual assistant is then able to interact directly with applicationsboth system and third-party, and perform many of the operations directly on the devicethus guaranteeing maximum privacy.

Apple Intelligence e privacy

About the privacy, a topic very dear to Apple and – obviously – its users, the company has made it clear that on-device processing is not always possible. When the requests are in fact more complex you need to be able to count on more processing power. In that case it comes around Private Cloud Computea technology that allows you to manage requests on cloud guaranteeing though the same level of safety and protection as Apple devices.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can flex and scale its computational capacity and draw on larger server-based models to handle more complex requests. These models run on servers with Apple chips, providing a foundation that allows Apple to ensure that data will not be retained or exposed.

The agreement with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to iPhone, iPad and Mac

Tim Cook confirmed that the company has made an agreement with OpenAI – already condemned by Elon Musk – to make his ChatGPT (GPT-4o) on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Users will be able to “directly access its image and document understanding capabilities without having to switch between tools,” and will also be able to ask the AI chatbot for help via Siri. In that case, again as a matter of privacythe virtual assistant will ask for theauthorization to the user before sending questions, photos or documents to ChatGPT.
