Beeper: the app that brings Apple iMessage to Android is back. And it becomes free

In recent days, a stimulating tug of war has taken place between the giant Apple and the startup Beeper. The latter, taking the “cue” from a young high school researcher, has developed an innovative software that effectively brings together Android and iOS devices, allowing the exchange of iMessage messages from one to the other.

The idea of Beeper Minithis is the name of the application which immediately became one of the most installed in the world, is in fact that of allowing the sending and receiving of iMessage communications via a blue bubble, regardless of the devices used by end users. In short, the Beeper developers have demonstrated that “getting iOS and Android devices to agree” is far from impossible and that the “penalization” of messages coming from the green robot’s terminals (“confined” in a green bubble) it is a precise choice by Apple.

As was easy to predict, what the startup achieved did not go down well with Apple’s top management who decided to block Beeper very quickly: after a few hours, the application which in fact brought iMessage su Android it had stopped working, no longer allowing messages to be sent or received.

Beeper Mini is back in working order and it’s also free: it’s a tug of war with Apple

The Beeper team also expected, deep down, the Apple’s reaction. Thus, in the space of just 24 hours, the developers of Beeper Mini have developed and published a new release of the app on the Google Play Store which restores all its functionality.

The main prerogative of Beeper Mini is that it does not use strange tricks: it does not use cloud systems that act as intermediaries and “talks” directly to the Apple iMessage servers. It also preserves the crittografia end-to-end ensuring that users’ messages are protected from one end of the communication to the other, without there being the possibility – for any person or entity – to read or modify their content.

Since the launch of Beeper Mini was comparable to the experience of a roller coaster, the application developers opted for a draconian decision: the app becomes freeat least temporarily, until all the problems are resolved and the software house cannot guarantee sufficient stability.

For the moment it is essential to use an Apple ID

Currently, to benefit from the advantages of Beeper Mini, it is essential to use a Apple ID for the registration. Login to the platform via telephone number it is not currently available. This change is a direct consequence of the changes implemented on the server side by Apple in recent days. However, the developers of Beeper are confident that they can also overcome this obstacle and restore access via telephone number.

The programmers explain that the problem with the number registration phone was one of the main reasons why Beeper Mini had difficulty sending and receiving messages. To quickly resolve the situation and allow users to continue using the app, Beeper has temporarily adopted the use of Apple ID.

The steps to create an Apple ID on any operating system are quite simple: the problem that briefly knocked out Beeper Mini seems far from insurmountable.

What happened after the launch of Beeper Mini and why Apple had “turned off the taps”

The creators of Beeper Mini also shared a report on what happened in the last few days. After the initial success of the application, downloaded by more than 100,000 users in just 48 hours, Apple intervened quickly to block its normal functioning.

In Apple’s statement released to the press we read, among other things, the following: “We have taken steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that use fake credentials to gain access to iMessage. These techniques posed significant risks to user security and privacy, including the possibility of exposing metadata and triggering unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks“.

Dispute Apple’s statements

Beeper attacks Apple head-on, stating that he expected a response from the company led by Tim Cook but certainly not in the form and tone used. Representatives of the startup brand Apple’s comments as FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt). If anything, the company claims, “Beeper Mini has made communication between Android and iPhone users more secure. And this is a fact“.

The statement is justified by explaining in detail the default functioning of iMessage. Before Beeper Mini, the default chat app on iPhone forced all customers to send green bubble SMS messages not encrypted and unsafe to friends, family and colleagues who use Android terminals.

Even worse, when iPhone customers added an Android phone number to a encrypted group chat (hence secure) already set up in iMessage, the Messages app defaulted the entire group chat to using unencrypted and insecure SMS.

Beeper Mini solved this problem (and many others) and allowed Android and iOS customers to enjoy a safe, easy, and high-quality chat experience. We’re working to make chat safer and enable consumer choice“, Beeper spokespeople continue.

Beeper Mini is a pain in the ass for Apple

It goes without saying, once again, that what Beeper has achieved shakes the whole Apple ecosystem. The success of the application has highlighted how Android and iOS users want to communicate directly and without barriers with high quality images/videos, using data encryption, emojis, obtaining status information, with the possibility of receiving confirmations of reading and benefit from all the modern chat features.

With the DMA (Digital Markets Act) Europe is forcing the messaging app develop so-called gatekeepers to open up to competing platforms. What Beeper has achieved could in fact strengthen the orientation of the European legislator who on the one hand intends to support maximum interoperability between services developed by different subjects but on the other cannot accept that approximate implementations could undermine end-to-end encryption or cause, even potentially, risks in terms of privacy and security.
