Best laptops for gaming

Portatili Gaming Most PC gaming enthusiasts understand that to play to their full potential, you need to harness the power provided by a classic desktop PC, with a case, motherboard, video card and monitor optimized for gaming.

Playing PC games from a laptop is not always a happy choice: the lower computing power, the problem of overheating and the small screen are all valid reasons to avoid using a notebook as a game console. But this rule is not always respected: there are numerous laptops available designed to play great as if we were on a desktop PC, with few sacrifices.

If we want a Laptop to play, in this guide we will show you the characteristics that a gaming notebook must have and the best models on the online market, so you can get a good price.

Gaming notebook features

We assume that the power obtainable on fixed PCs is not obtainable on portable PCs (except for very rare very expensive cases), a good gaming notebook must have the following characteristics to run all recent games.

1) Processor

As a processor we can focus on Intel Core optimized for use on notebooks, again synonymous with quality when it comes to assembling gaming PCs. On laptops the processors are slightly different than those available for PCs, but aiming for Intel Core i5 o i7 we will still get the power needed to run any game.

A good alternative is the AMD Ryzen 5 e 7, but avoid processors like Intel Pentium, AMD A-Series and Intel Core i3 if possible, which are absolutely unsuitable for gaming.

2) RAM

Having a lot of RAM is essential for running modern games, even more so on laptops. The minimum to bet on is 12GB, but many games may not start with this amount of memory so we always recommend betting on models that have at least 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

To play, we avoid PCs with amounts of RAM equal to or less than 8 GB: they are now inadequate on fixed PCs, let alone on gaming notebooks.

3) Video card

The video card is essential to be able to run all games at the highest resolutions without jerks or slowdowns. Since the video cards on laptops are actually simple chips soldered to the motherboard, we will not be able to replace them in the event of a problem or if we intend to perform a hardware upgrade.

To play without problems we rely on the video cards of the NVIDIA RTX series O AMD RX, often integrated in customized version laptops (with chips and video memories printed on the motherboard) but able to offer performances comparable to the counterparts dedicated to fixed PCs.

4) Storage

In order to save all the games we need a large amount of space and high performance in reading and writing. A simple hard drive is no longer enough to play, but we will have to consider only gaming notebooks equipped with an SSD as main storage.

The best results are obtained with the NVMe SSS M.2, compact and performing memories now present on all gaming notebooks.

5) Screen

The screen built into the laptop it must be large enough and with good resolution, so you can play all games without straining your eyes, avoiding having to connect an external monitor via HDMI.

To be comfortable in all scenarios we choose only laptops with resolution FullHD (1920×1080) and a diagonal of at least 15 inches.

6) Connectivity

Connectivity is important on a gaming PC, because there may be many peripherals to be connected. They must not be missing Dual-Band Wi-Fi connection and Bluetooth connection, the latter essential to connect i wireless controller.

As ports, make sure that there are at least 3 USB ports, an HDMI output and the classic Ethernet port for direct connection to the modem. The DVD player is not always present, often replaced by an additional disc using a special caddy.

7) Autonomy

A gaming notebook will hardly be used away from a power outlet, considering that maximum performance is only available if the notebook is connected to the mains.

So on gaming notebooks we can very well avoid looking at this parameter, useful only when the power goes out and we want to turn off the game without losing everything.

8) Backlit keyboard

In a gaming notebook the keyboard is very important and must be backlit. The backlight allows you to play or work even at night, without difficulty in recognizing the keys to press and is, for me, something indispensable for any computer.

It should be noted that some gaming laptops do not have a numeric keypad, which I personally recommend to keep even if you buy it separately.
