Mitchell Baker first served as CEO from 2005 to 2008. After Chris Beard took over in 2019, Baker returned to lead Mozilla again in 2020, three months after endorsing the firing of approximately 100 people. Furthermore, due to the impact of the pandemic on company finances, the announcement of a further 250 layoffs came quickly.

At the time, Cal Paterson, a UK-based software developer and Firefox user, published an analysis criticizing Mozilla’s large executive compensation. In short, on the one hand, the top management kept significant salaries for themselves but on the other the market shares continued to decrease. “30% of all spending goes towards administration costs“, argued Paterson. “Charity Navigator, an organization that measures the effectiveness of NGOs, would give them a rating of zero out of ten. (…) To score 5/10 on that metric, Mozilla’s administrative costs would have to be less than 25% of spending, and to score 10/10, under 15%“.

According to financial documents shared by Mozilla, Baker’s annual compensation would grow from approximately $5.6 million in 2021 to $6.9 million in 2022. Over the same period, Mozilla’s revenues, long supported by payments received from Mountain View to make Google the default search engine in Firefox, they dropped from $527 million to $510 million.

Beyond the observations regarding cost management and executive compensation, at this point we need a new vision and the willingness to return to looking at online activities and communications.

In 2020, Mozilla entered the software business VPN.
