ChatGPT not saving conversations? Here’s what to do

AI-powered chatbots are becoming an integral part of our digital interactions and ChatGPT, the flagship of OpenAIstands out as a powerful tool useful for various tasks.

However, some users have reported an issue where ChatGPT fails to save conversations, forcing them to restart the chat for each new prompt. Below is a list of solutions to solve this headache and enjoy a seamless experience.

  • 1. Check your Internet connection

    The most common culprit for ChatGPT’s inability to save conversations is one unstable internet connection. To rule out this issue, open a new tab in your web browser and try loading a website other than OpenAI.

    If the site doesn’t load, it’s a clear indicator of an internet connectivity issue. In that case, among other things, you can try restarting your router, troubleshooting your network card, or contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  • 2. Enable chat history on ChatGPT

    Assuming your internet connection is stable, the next step is to ensure that the ChatGPT conversation saving feature is enabled. If this option has been disabled, perhaps inadvertently, it could be the reason why chats are not saved.

    For appropriate checks, click on the profile icon in the lower left corner of the ChatGPT interface and select “Settings“. In the window that opens, click on the item “Data controls” and activate the option “Chat & training history“. After enabling this feature, start a new chat session to see if the site saves the conversation correctly.

In the case of Google Chrome, you need to click on the More icon (the one with the three vertical dots) at the top right. Then on “Other tools” then “Clear browsing data”. On the page that opens, tick only “Cached images and files” and confirm with the “Clear data” button.

    If you use browser extensions, these may interfere with the functionality of ChatGPT, preventing chats from being saved. To check if this is the case, disable all browser extensions, then check whether ChatGPT saves conversations correctly. If so, activate the extensions one by one to identify and remove the one causing the interference.

    For those who use Microsoft Edge, just click on the Extensions icon (the puzzle-shaped one) in the top bar and then on “Manage extensions”. Here you can remove the extensions one by one and activate them again by moving the switch to the right. The process is very similar Google Chrome.

  • 6. Reset your web browser settings

    If none of the above steps produce the desired results, your web browser settings may be configured incorrectly, causing compatibility issues with some websites, including ChatGPT.

    To resolve this issue, consider restore your browser’s default settings. This action will erase all customized settings, returning them to factory defaults. Therefore, proceed with this step only if you have exhausted all other options.

    In the rare case that none of the above methods solve the problem, it’s time to ask the ChatGPT support team for assistance. They are equipped to handle technical issues and should be able to provide a solution to that too.

    To contact support, click the question mark icon in the bottom right corner of the ChatGPT interface and follow the on-screen instructions to send a message. Now all that remains is to wait for a response, as this is often the final step in resolving the problem.
