Cheapest AMD processors for notebooks: Ryzen 9 7840HX and 7940HX

In March 2023 we presented the new high-end AMD Ryzen 7045HX processors, among the best performing CPUs ever. In particular, Ryzen 9 7845HX e Ryzen 9 7945HX I’m the current one not any more of the company led by Lisa Su.

The AMD Ryzen 7045HX series, note how “Dragon Range“, it’s a range premium of CPUs that combine desktop and mobile functionality. They use a maximum of 16 core Zen 4offering a significant increase in performance multi-threading compared to the previous generation’s 8-core 6900HX chip. Unlike the series intended for a wider audience of users, which works with a default TDP of 45 W, the HX line ensures greater power, going up to 55 W.

AMD recently introduced the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D flagship model, which boasts 64MB of 3D V-Cache and a total of 128 MB of L3 cache. This CPU is however made available in a rather small number of copies, limited to specific systems. On the other hand, the CPU itself already has a high cost; when combined with the most powerful dedicated video cards, i budget problems for the vast majority of users for whom Ryzen 9 7945HX3D should be intended.

Two more processors on the way Dragon Range at more affordable costs

With the precise aim of conquering even larger market shares, AMD would be preparing new Ryzen 9 7840HX and Ryzen 9 7940HX CPUs: they will offer a similar number of cores to the previous ones, but will work at clock frequencies slightly lower. According to information that has emerged in recent days, Ryzen 9 7840HX will keep 12 Zen 4 cores while Ryzen 9 7940HX it will feature 16 Zen 4 cores, just like its high-end counterparts.

It is not clear when AMD intends to launch the new processors but it is reasonable to believe that the company will release them shortly in order to guarantee the availability of new CPUs, and therefore of laptops based on them, by the next Christmas holidays. The use of the trademark Ryzen 7000 suggests the launch by the end of 2023 although it is not excluded that the presentation could now be postponed to next year.

Obviously, the processors will be compatible with high-end AMD components: PC manufacturers will not have to redesign their notebooks but will be able to use the new chips right away.

With the introduction of the GPU Radeon RX7900M Enough about the architecture Navi 31, AMD is strengthening its presence in the mobile market, offering more options to laptop makers. However, medium-high range options are still missing: the Radeon RX 7800M/7700M series built on Navi 32, could bring a breath of fresh air. In another article we talked about the success achieved with AMD RDNA 3 with which the Sunnyvale company repeated the results obtained on the CPU side with the Ryzen offer.
