Configuration for ONT and fiber optic connection parameters

Let’s find out together how to best configure the optical fiber for all Internet operators, so as to surf at maximum speed.

Have fibra

The problem with optical fiber is that if you want to do it yourself, there are constraints that are difficult to overcome. It is a bit of a way to bind customers after that to internet connection companies, in order to force them to accept their modem, often with an extra payment and in any case with a check.

We have seen, however, that even with the fiber connection that arrives at home (therefore with the fiber cable and SFP connection) that it is possible to do it yourself and connect any modem to the FTTH fiber with many difficulties.

Wanting to do even more, let’s now see what can be configured on an ONT device, that is the one that is connected to the wall, the one that is mounted by the Fastweb, TIM, Windo Vodafone technician when connecting to the fiber at home.

In the following guide we will show you how to configure the parameters to navigate in optical fiber on a third-party modem, taking care to use the ONT for the type of connection installed at our home or office.

If we want to get the most out of our fiber connection we will have to equip ourselves with a modern and powerful modem such as the AVM FRITZ! Box 7530 AX and proceed with the configuration, so as to be able to take full advantage of the operator’s line.

For the guide we will show you the steps to follow on a AVM FRITZ!Box, but the parameters can be replicated on any modem or router equipped with a WAN port or a Gigabit LAN port (configurable as WAN).

Initial configuration

On Italian FTTH lines we can connect using two types of optical termination:

  • HAVE: an external box (powered by an electrical wall socket) where the optical fiber is connected and where the light signal is converted into an electrical signal, ready to be routed in a normal Ethernet cable.
  • SFP: the fiber optic cable reaches a small adapter (self-powered), to be inserted inside the proprietary modem or inside a specific ONT.

If we already have the ONT for home fiber, all we have to do is connect the third-party modem via an Ethernet cable to it and proceed with the parameters indicated in the following chapters (depending on the operator used).

If instead we have the SFP for the optical fiber first of all we will have to get a third-party ONT, to which we will connect the operator’s SFP and the Ethernet cable of the modem chosen for the home connection.

To be on the safe side, connect (to the new modem) the Ethernet cable to the WAN port or the LAN port enabled as a WAN port (usually LAN 1, but it changes according to the modem).

TIM connection parameters

If we have TIM’s FTTH connection, we can configure the parameters on the AVM FRITZ! Box modem by connecting any PC to the latter, starting the browser and typing http://fritz.box O 192.168.178.1, so as to enter the configuration panel.

Once inside the configuration panel we press on the menu Assistants, we press on Configure Internet access and, in the window that will appear, expand the drop-down menu, select TIM as the provider and put the check mark on TIM Fibra (FTTH).

TIM

We press on Come on and confirm where necessary. If we have followed all the steps correctly the modem will connect to the Internet and we will immediately surf at maximum speed.

Vodafone connection parameters

For those who have an FTTH connection with the Vodafone operator, we can correctly configure the parameters by opening the same configuration panel seen in the previous chapter, opening the menu again Assistantsby pressing on Configure Internet access and, in the window that will appear, expand the drop-down menu, select as a provider Vodafone and put the check mark on Vodafone FTTH.

Vodafone

We confirm to start browsing immediately. If the automatic method doesn’t work, let’s take us to the route Internet -> Access data -> Internet access, expand the drop-down menu in the center of the interface, select the item Other Internet provider, we check the item Connection to external modem or router and make sure we check the item too Establish the Internet connection yourself.

To navigate correctly, we set or activate the parameters visible in the following bulleted list:

  • We insert vodafonedsl in the field Username.
  • We insert vodafonedsl in the field Password.
  • We press on the item Change connection settings.
  • We check the item Use VLAN for Internet access.
  • We insert the value 1036 in the field ID VLAN.

To complete the configuration we set 1000 in the field Downstream e 300 in the field Upstream, then we confirm all the parameters by pressing down on Apply.

WindTre connection parameters

Even with the WindTre operator we can quickly configure the FTTH connection by taking us to the configuration panel (as seen in the first chapter), opening the menu Assistantby pressing on Configure Internet access, selecting as the provider WIND Tre and placing the check mark on WIND Tre FTTH.

If the assistant fails to establish the connection we can manually configure the parameters by taking us to Internet -> Access data -> Internet accessby selecting from the drop-down menu Other Internet provider, ticking the items Connection to external modem or router e Establish the Internet connection yourself.

To navigate on the WindTre network we set or activate the parameters visible in the following bulleted list:

  • We insert welcome in the field Username.
  • We insert guest in the field Password.
  • We press on the item Change connection settings.
  • We check the item Use VLAN for Internet access.
  • We insert the value 835 in the field ID VLAN.

Also in this case we complete the configuration by entering 1000 in the field Downstream e 300 in the field Upstream and finally pressing on Apply.

Fastweb connection parameters

Even on FTTH Fastweb network we can use the Modem Assistant to facilitate the connection. We open the configuration panel (as seen in the first chapter), we open the path Assistant -> Configure Internet Access, select the item in the drop-down menu Fastweb and we tick Fastweb FTTH.

If the connection does not work we can try with the manual configuration, taking us in the path Internet -> Access data -> Internet access, always selecting the item from the drop-down menu Other Internet provider and ticking the items Connection to external modem or router e Establish the Internet connection yourself.

To browse the ultra-fast Fastweb network, we set or activate the parameters visible in the following bulleted list:

  • We tick the option No in the field Access data.
  • We press on the item Change connection settings.
  • We check the item Use VLAN for Internet access.
  • We insert the value 835 in the field ID VLAN.

To conclude the configuration we insert 1000 in the field Downstream e 300 in the field Upstream, finally clicking on Apply.

Conclusions

With a powerful modem such as the FRITZ! Box, setting up the fiber optic connection is very simple, since the assistant helps you to automatically configure the parameters and quickly navigate on any line. If the connection fails, we can always try the manual connection parameters, which are also excellent for configuring others fiber optic optimized modems.

If we can’t connect with our personal modem in any way, we always can contact the operator’s telephone support, so as to be able to unlock any blocks and obtain the missing parameters for fixed telephony.
