DDoS attacks against Sweden increased by 466% after joining NATO

An investigation carried out by Cloudflare offered a snapshot, compared to first quarter of 2024I respect them DDoS attacks worldwide.

The platform, which offers an efficient defense system against this type of cyber aggression, was blocked 4.5 million attacks in the first 90 days of the year.

Considering the combined number of attacks DDoS HTTP and attacks DDoS L3/4the total number is increased by 50% compared to last year year and of 18% compared to the previous quarter.

The most far-reaching operation that, at least so far, has characterized 2024 has been the botnet Mirai whose impact, however, was partly cushioned by Cloudflare’s work.

Despite the efforts of those involved in cybersecurity, this type of attack remains one of the main online threats. Cybercriminals, in this sense, work by sending large numbers of DNS requests towards a goal, actually going to overload the servers blocking them.

DDoS attacks: most of the IPs involved are US

According to Cloudflare, the main source of HTTP DDoS attacks in the period studied were United Stateswith a fifth of all IPs affected.

The Chinese came second, followed respectively by Germania, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia e Iran. Similar results also regarding L3/4 DDoS attacks, with American IPs in 40% of the cases followed by Germania, Brazil, Singapore e Russia. Lo Zimbabwe curiously, it is the main source of L3/L4 DDoS attacks, with approximately 89% of the traffic processed by the African country’s Cloudflare data centers cataloged as L3/4 DDoS attacks.

Other interesting data concern the enormous increase in attacks against Swedenwith an overall increase of 466% compared to the previous quarter. According to experts, this increase would be linked to the Scandinavian country’s accession to the NATO.

Overall, Cloudflare has noticed a growing trend for this threat and, for this reason, has recommended the use of adequate defensive tools to avoid damage to websites and other potentially risky online activities.
