1) 3D printer features

  • Print area: this value indicates the maximum surface area used by the object we are printing. Usually measured in three dimensions of space (XYZ) and in modern home printers we find printing areas of at least 15 cubic centimeters.
  • Extruders: This device is the equivalent of the print head on 2D printers. As a general rule, the size of the extruder nozzle determines the size of the layers and consequently the printing precision (the smaller, the greater precision).
  • Filament width: Indicates the capacity of the “cartridge”, i.e. when we can print with a single spool of filament. ABS and PLA are used as the material (although TPU and PETG are available as new filament materials), made available as 1.75 millimeter filaments or as 3 millimeter filaments.
  • Printing speed: the printing speed is influenced by the type of material chosen and the model to be created. In any case we try to maintain a speed equal to or lower than 20 millimeters per minute.
  • Horizontal resolution: this value indicates the minimum movement that the extruder makes and consequently the minimum level of detail that we can print. The horizontal resolution, to be acceptable, must be at least 0.03 millimeters.
  • Vertical resolution: this value instead shows the minimum width of each layer of material deposited by the extruder; lower values ​​correspond to greater precision and higher quality of the 3D printing. The average is around 200 microns, but some printers even reach 100 microns.
