Google Chrome for macOS: it will soon be possible to turn any website into a desktop app

Good news for Mac users using Google Chrome as your main browser. In fact, the latter will soon allow you to install any web page as application on the desktop. A solution that those who use Safari on macOS Sonoma should already know.

The new feature was not announced by the Mountain View giant but it was discovered and shared on X by the user Leopev64 in the latest build of Chrome Canary. This includes a new option called “Install page as app“, more precisely in the section “Save and Share “. Even websites like YouTube and Reddit that already have their own web apps will automatically appear as optional installs in this menu.

Clicking on the above option displays the message “Install app” with the two buttons to confirm the operation or cancel it. Web apps are automatically saved in one subfolder called Chrome Canary Apps and from here, if desired, they can then be dragged to the macOS Dock.

Google Chrome Canary - Install pages as app

From these first screens it seems that the implementation of Chrome’s web apps is more sophisticated than that of Safari. The feature offers not only a simplified toolbar with navigation buttons, but also a reduced settings menu with options such as Copy URL, Open in Chrome, Uninstall, Print, Find e Edit.

The basis of this functionality is Google Chrome’s support for Progressive Web Apps (PWA)originally adopted by Big G as a replacement for Chrome apps on the Play Store.

How to try the new Google Chrome feature now

For all users who want to try this new feature right away, there is a simple way to do so. Simply download the latest Google Chrome Canary update, version 124, and enable the two new flags shown below:

  • chrome://flags/#web-app-universal-install
  • chrome://flags/#shortcuts-not-apps

For information, within a few days the tech giant should release the stable build of Chrome 123, and this one will not include the functionality described above.
