Being used to create visual content, photos and videos, of great impact, most drones by their very nature have one or more photographic sensors which, however, are rarely of quality, unless you want to spend a sum. as important as the one required (1,519 euros on Amazon) for the DJI FPV. Consequently, many lovers of aerial photography are used to taking normal action cameras and relieving them of the superfluous, screens, batteries, body, in the name of not always optimal results. The American GoPro, aware of this, has just announced its solution.

Specifically, Nick Woodman’s company, renowned for its wearable action cameras, did the “dirty work” for the user, creating the HERO10 Black Bones, a “stripped” version, or rather, “reduced to the bone “(50 x 68 x 29 mm) of the normal HERO10 Black action camera seen last September, compared to which its chassis, not waterproof and indeed modified for better ventilation, weighs – without lens cap – just 54 grams .

Suitable for being mounted on FPV drones, the HERO10 Black Bones retains the highlights of the normal model, and therefore enjoys HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization and the GP2 processor which, in particular, supports the half format 4: 3 or the full one in 16: 9. in favor of video resolutions from 5.3K / 60p to 2.7K / 240 (passing through 4K / 120p). The screens (front and back) were removed, and the battery, with the connector on the back, the GH1.25-3P, which performs a dual function: on the one hand, via the voltage regulator, it allows to draw the energy from the battery (2S-6S / 5-27V) of the drone, avoiding the need to worry if more than the 5V that the action camera needs arrives.

The other function of the connector relates to the control, already possible using the buttons moved on the back of the Bones, via GoPro Labs QR codes, Quick app, using the GoPro remote control, since – using the OpenGoPro API or the BetaFlight open firmware for models with STM32F4 processor – you can control the action camera (obviously including the slot for the microSD) with the same controller of the drone. The technical data sheet is completed by the assembly section, which relies on the housing that uses the same standard connector as drones with first person view, and the threaded hole, and the fact that the GoPro Player software now includes the ReelSteady 2-0 tool , so that even in post production, using GPMF metadata, it is possible to stabilize the footage.

Pending the certifications for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, which will allow it to be sold also in Italy (at 529.99 euros including VAT), for now the HERO10 Black Bones action camera is on sale in the USA only, at a price of 499.99 dollars in open market version, which go down to 399.99 euros for those who already have a GoPro subscription.
