By activating secure DNS we will have the certainty that our requests on the Internet cannot be intercepted or collected to profile us.
DNS requests are an important part of Internet browsing, since they allow you to open web pages without having to know the IP addresses (without DNS instead of google.com for example we should write 126.96.36.199 every time). These requests are handled by DNS servers and, even if we use SSL connections, they are visible in clear text: no one forbids the telephony operator or any other attacker from track our Internet activity via DNS requests.
Fortunately, we can solve the problem activating secure DNS immediately (o DNS-over-HTTPS), so as to make DNS requests impossible for any telephony operator to track, as well as being impossible to divert maliciously (DNS hijacking). Let’s see together how to enable secure DNS on all popular browsers installable on computers, so as to really protect our privacy.

Enable Secure DNS on Google Chrome
To activate secure DNS on the Google Chrome browser, open the address bar and type chrome://settings/security, so as to immediately open the right settings window; alternatively we can always press on the top right on the three dots and take us on the path Settings -> Privacy and security -> Security.
In the new window we scroll down to find the section Advancedwe activate the switch next to the item Use secure DNSwe select the item With Personalized and choose, from the drop-down menu, one of the operators with secure DNS available (Cloudflare or Google DNS). Alternatively we can also enter a personal secure DNS, simply by typing it in the text field Enter a custom DNS provider.
Enable Secure DNS on Microsoft Edge
If we use Microsoft Edge as a system browser we can activate secure DNS by pressing on the address bar at the top and typing edge://settings/privacy; alternatively we can always press on the menu at the top right, open the menu Settings and finally take us to the menu Privacy, research and services.
After having moved to the indicated menu, we scroll down the page until we find the section Safetythen we turn on the switch next to the item Use secure DNS to specify how to look up the network address of websites and finally select the item Choose a service provider. A drop-down menu will open immediately where you can choose the most popular services, but nothing prevents you from typing your favorite secure DNS service by hand.
Enable Secure DNS on Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox browser users can enable secure DNS by typing in the address bar about:preferences#general or, alternatively, opening the menu at the top right and taking us on the path Settings -> General.
After opening the right screen, scroll down the page until you find the section Network settingswe press the button Settings and, in the new window, scroll down and activate the check mark on the item Attiva DNS over HTTPS. Also in this case we can either choose one of the providers recommended by Mozilla (Cloudflare or NextDNS) or choose the voice Personalizedso you can enter your preferred secure DNS provider.
Enable secure DNS on your home modem
If we want to activate i DNS sicuri on all devices connected to the network we can try to activate them directly from the home modem, so you don’t even have to manually configure individual browsers on PCs or mobile devices. To proceed we must first of all have an advanced modem such as the AVM FRITZ! Box 7530 AX (€ 164), then take us to its control interface and take us to the DNS section, which in the case of the FRITZ! Box is Internet -> Access data -> DNS server.
To start, let’s choose the voice Use other DNSv4 servers and insert in the two fields 188.8.131.52 e 184.108.40.206, so as to choose Google DNS as the primary DNS server and Cloudflare as a backup server. To enable secure DNS, activate the checkbox next to the item Encrypted Name Resolution on the Internet (DNS over TLS)leave all the items immediately below active and go directly to the text field below DNS server resolution nameswhere we need to insert dns.google e

To confirm, press down on Applica and we use the security procedure provided by these modems (ie pressing a physical key on the modem and then confirming on OK).
From now on we will browse with secure DNS on all devices connected to the modem and, in case of resolution problems, we can always use the clear DNS (even if they will be used very rarely, since we rely on two secure providers such as Google and Cloudflare).
