Let’s see all the things to do to speed up your computer if it is running slowly and to always keep Windows optimized

PC too slow When your computer starts to slow down and open programs and windows more and more slowly, it’s time to give it a little attention to get it back as fast as it was when you first bought it or just formatted it.

Speeding up a Windows computer can mean several things: ensuring that programs do not crash, being able to start multiple applications at the same time without slowdowns, turning on the PC in less time, turning it off without having to wait too long, avoiding the presence of harmful programs and optimize Windows performance on your computer.

1) Disable programs from startup

To turn on the PC quickly and to prevent some unnecessary programs from remaining in memory, occupying and wasting resources, it is necessary to check what starts automatically together with the Windows system. The problem is very common because, when you install a program in Windows, it often automatically configures itself to run automatically.

To quickly check the auto-start programs, just right-click on the bottom bar and then open Task Manager -> Startup o Task Manager -> Startup Apps. Let’s right-click on the individual programs present and disable them to prevent them from starting together with Windows.

In another article we saw the best programs to manage Windows startup.

2) Delete unnecessary files

When using a computer, files are saved, sometimes automatically, in different sectors of the disk and in various folders. Windows, in addition to normal programs, creates temporary files and log or history files; Deleted files end up in the trash can which, if not emptied, can fill up with garbage.

To quickly clean any Windows PC we open This PC o Computer resourcesthen right-click on the hard disk or SSD to clean up, then on Property and we use our voice Cleaning disk.

Alternatively there are programs to clean your Windows computercleaning your PC every month with a complete and powerful program like CCleaner.

3) Plan Memory Sense

Windows provides a tool called Storage Sense to keep track of files that accumulate on your PC; programming Memory sensor we can make sure that Windows itself “cleans” the memory without our intervention, still giving us time to save any personal files that may be downloaded.

To proceed we press WIN+I on the keyboard, let’s get on the path System -> Storagewe activate the voice Memory sensorpress on it to open the configurations menu and activate the switch under the item Automatic user content cleanup.

At the bottom we adjust the automatic cleaning parameters: we run the memory sensor every month, we delete the files from the recycle bin if they have been present for more than 30 days and we delete the contents of the folder Download after 60 days from the last time they were opened.

Also synchronizing OneDrive on our PC we can adjust the frequency with which the Microsoft cloud “removes unopened files” from the internal memory, thus leaving only the online copy (default 60 days).

In another article we saw how schedule computer cleaning and maintenance.

4) Optimize and defragment disks

After using a computer for a while, the mechanical hard drive fragments the saved files, that is, they are broken down into several different sectors, where free space is found. Obviously disk fragmentation negatively affects system performance because the hard disk must spin several times to recover all the pieces of a file before executing it.

The Disk Defragmenter utility serves to “bring together” the pieces of the various files by arranging them in an orderly manner.
We can launch it on Windows by opening the Start menu and typing Defragment and opening his voice Defragment and optimize drives.

If we use an SSD or an M.2 NVMe it is not necessary to defragment anything but we will have to perform the TRIM operation, which frees up the unused cells and makes the solid state drive faster in the long run, as also seen in the guide on how to defragment and clean your disk, SSD or Hard Disk.

Alternatively we can use an external program for optimization, using one of disk defragmentation software.

5) Remove viruses and malware

Viruses and malware are often responsible for slow down and long loading times on your computer. In fact, it is advisable to periodically scan (even automatically) your PC with the updated antiviral systems present on your PC, using light programs such as Malwarebytes or lightweight antivirus like Bitdefender Free.

To learn more we can read our guides on best free antivirus for PC come on how to configure the antivirus so as not to slow down the PC during scans and checks.

6) Fix disk errors

When you open the Windows properties, in addition to the cleaner and the defragmentation utility, there is a third tool that allows you to correct hard disk errors, caused for example by sudden power blackouts or faulty installations of programs and drivers.

Scandisk (in fast mode) should be run at least once a month if you use your PC every day and you should definitely run it every time your computer crashes or shuts down on its own.

We can start it by right clicking on the hard disk where Windows is installed (from This PC o Computer resources), by going to the Tools tab and clicking on Check it out.

In another article we have created a complete guide to scandisk and other disk error checking programs.

7) Disable unnecessary Windows features

By default, Windows has many functions that are most likely not needed in everyday PC use and which use up resources unnecessarily; Fortunately, most Windows features can be turned off.

Using the Windows search function, you can search for the word disable or the word disable to find many optimization guides; alternatively we can search by pressing WIN+I on the keyboard and taking us to the path App -> App installate or along the way Apps -> Optional Features.

Or alternatively we can always open the Start menu and search for the item Turn Windows features on or off to search for functions that we don’t use (while still paying maximum attention to what is deactivated).

As a guide to the apps or functions to deactivate we can read how to make Windows super fast with system tweaks and disabling useless services, functions and options or alternatively we can speed up the computer by reading the ai guides Windows tricks for “Windows Explorer” and slow folders o Optimize Windows for a fast PC and better computer performance).

8) Uninstall traces removed programs

When you uninstall a program they always leave some traces which, in the long run, accumulate on the disk (this is because some software is specifically designed to evade the Windows uninstallation system).

To be able to completely uninstall programs we can use a program like Revo Uninstallerwhich we also talked about in the guide on how uninstall programs with some more powerful and comprehensive tools.

9) Delete unnecessary items right-click menu

When you right-click on a file, it happens that Windows takes a while to display the context menu due to too many items present, often created by the various programs that we have added to Windows and which provide this integrated functionality in the context menu.

To clear the context menu we recommend reading the guide Disable unnecessary options from right-click menus and avoid Windows slowdowns.

10) Limit the number of items inside each folder

If there are many files in a single folder (especially videos or images) its loading can be slowed down due to the preview managed by the operating system or the antiviral control. We therefore recommend creating more folders and moving files within them in a more analytical way, so as to have tidier folders and files accessible more quickly.

Furthermore, it is a good idea to keep the desktop without too many icons, maximum 3 or 4 columns.

11) Clean the inside of the PC from dust

As explained in the guide Clean the dust inside the computer computer fans that blow air to cool hardware components can become clogged with dust, animal hair and other forms of dirt; this can cause the system to overheat causing slowdowns or, more likely, sudden shutdowns.

We clean your PC case at least every 3 months and remove all the dust we can so as to make the internal components last longer and avoid slowdowns due to overheating.

12) Get lightweight Windows

Lighten the graphics of Windows it can make the execution of programs and commands more fluid, especially if the computer is a few years old.

To minimize Windows graphics we open the Start menu, search View advanced system settingswe press the button Settings (present under the section Performance) and press on Adjust for best performance.

To generate a minimum amount of graphics, make sure to leave the voices active Show window contents while dragging, Smoothes the corners of screen characters e Use label shadingthen press OK at the bottom to immediately use super-fast Windows.

Conclusions

With all these tricks we will be can speed up your PC that is too slow, always keeping it fast even after many years of use and many files saved or downloaded. Obviously the effects of all the tricks will be perceived more on a fairly young computer (less than 6 years old); on very old PCs (over 6 years old) it is convenient use Linux as the operating system or go directly to Chromebook.
