How to use your PC from another room

There are several reasons that can push users to decide to use a Desktop PC or laptop remotely.

In some cases, such a solution may be necessary for practical reasons such as the need for a larger room, perhaps to watch a film with friends or play your favorite video games on a larger screen. In other cases, there may be special needs, such as wanting to change rooms because it is too hot, for example, or for other reasons which may depend on work or leisure.

  • 1. Use remote desktop software

    There are many software available, both free and subscription-based, and each of these offers a whole series of more or less specific features that can fulfill even the needs of the most demanding users. Among them we find Remote Desktop, for example, which is available on Windows or the best known TeamVieweravailable for Windows and Mac.

    It should be emphasized that for some specific needs, such as the transmission of gaming sessionsusing such a system could not be the best solution because you could encounter annoying slowdowns.

    However, if your home network were fairly reliable and able to do the job, there shouldn’t be any particular problems with lag or image quality, provided you do not overdo it with connected devices at the same time.

  • 2. Connections via HDMI and USB

    If there is a need to access a computer remotely but in a small space, such as an apartment for example, it is possible to opt for a wired connection via HDMI and USB.

    I HDMI cables currently on the market generally guarantee lengths up to about 7 and a half meterswithout signal degradation.

    Of course you can also get longer lengths by opting for signal repeaters or HDMI extenders. However for distances too excessive these solutions are not recommended because they tend to significantly lower the signal qualityoffering worse performance.

    After solving the problems related to the audiovisual sector, we need to think about the USB connections and to the various peripherals to be used with the remote PC. For 2.0 ports, the maximum length of a cable is about 5 meters. Per USB 3.0 e 3.1, the maximum length exceeds 3 meters.

    Also in this case it is possible to use some extension cords or USB extenders to increase the distance, but one must again take into account possible reductions in the performance and reliability of connected devices. The same goes if you decide to connect one to the extension cord docking station which, in addition to USB, also allows you to add HDMI ports or SD or microSD card readers.

  • 3. Thunderbolt cables

    The Thunderbolt it is an interface that guarantees high speed and high bandwidth and that allows you to connect a wide range of devices to your computer, including external hard drives, displays and many other peripherals.

    These optical cables are made from fiber optics and are generally thin and flexible and can support longer lengths compared to copper Thunderbolt cables. This type of cable is also immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) which also makes them perfect for particular particular environments such as laboratories, for example.

    It must be emphasized, however, that optical Thunderbolt cables generally are much more expensive those in copper and any other type of cable described above. Moreover may not be supported by all devices and, before proceeding with the purchase, it will be necessary to necessarily check the specifications of the various devices.

    It is also good to remember that Thunderbolt cables they carry no power and you will need the appropriate dock to power the peripherals in use.
