If no sites load and downloads are interrupted, how to fix

How to solve the problem if the browser does not open any website even if the connection is there and active

Slow page downloads When the Internet does not work well, problems can be caused both by the Internet operator and by the internal network configuration. We can notice these problems by noting that the downloads never end and remain stationaryThat the connection comes and goesthat the streaming service jumps on the best or presents itself with a significantly lower quality than at the beginning or that the live Zoom jumps on the best without giving any warning.

In this guide we will show you how to solve connection and opening problems with websites with tricks and methods that can be applied by everyone, without being great computer experts. At the end of the tests we will certainly have solved the most common problems and will be able to connect at maximum speed.

1) Change the DNS of the connection

The first method you should try to reset your internet connection is change DNSone of the fundamental Internet services for loading sites and services.

To make this change we open the Start menu at the bottom left, open the app Settingswe open the menu Network and Internetwe press on the item Change tab optionsright-click on the currently active connection (Wi-Fi o Ethernet), press on the item Propertylet’s get on the voice Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)click on the button Property and, in the new screen, we check the item Use the following DNS server addresses and we provide the new DNS.

As DNS we can insert those of Google (8.8.8.8 e 8.8.4.4) or the address offered by Cloudflare (1.1.1.1); at the end of the modification we press OK and close all the windows.

If we are looking for a faster method to change DNS on Windows we can also rely on the program Dns Jumperas also seen in the guide on Change DNS server in Windows connection settings.

2) Use secure DNS

In addition to changing the DNS of the connection, it may be a good idea to use private DNS on the main browsers, so as to encrypt the request for new sites and prevent downloads from being slowed down by the connection provider.

To activate this function on Google Chrome let’s take the path Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Security and we activate the voice Use secure DNSchoosing the provider from those indicated in the list Select DNS provider.

On the same topic we can read the guide above how to activate secure DNS on Chrome, Edge, Firefox and on your modem.

3) Disable proxy and VPN

If we have a web proxy or VPN active on the computer, they could be the cause of slowdowns and blocks, given that these systems intervene between the computer connection and access to the sites and services we are using.

To verify that no proxy is active on Windows we open the app Settings in the Start menu, we open the menu Network and Internetwe open the side menu Proxy and check that the switches next to the items are not deactivated Automatically detect settings, Use configuration script e Usa server proxy.

If the problem is VPN connections, let’s get into it menu laterale VPN and we deactivate or delete any VPN present. We can also search for VPN programs by opening the Start menu and searching for VPN: if there is any themed program we will see it immediately and we can either deactivate or uninstall it.

If we have used Tor in the past to hide the connection, make sure it is not active, otherwise the connection could be affected, as also seen in the Guide to configure Tor with foreign IPs.

4) Change modem settings

If we have tried all the methods seen so far on Windows, it is best to shift attention to the home modem, given that in most cases it will be responsible for the slow connections.

Let’s first try to connect to the modem with another device, for example a smartphone, a tablet or another PC: if these work without problems, the problem is still on the computer, while if we notice slowdowns or blocks on them too, the problem is definitely the modem. There are various methods to restore the functioning of a modem, but the most famous ones are undoubtedly:

  • use 5GHz: if our modem is dual band, make sure you use the network connection Wi-Fi on the 5 GHz frequencydecidedly freer and less clogged.
  • change Wi-Fi channel: if we still use the 2.4 GHz connections a lot we access the modem and let’s change the transmission channelso as to prevent interference.
  • change DNS globally: by changing the DNS directly inside the modem we will be able to prevent missing connections to web services on all connected devices, without applying the suggestions seen above to each device.
  • restart the modem: with this system we will solve temporary problems due to the modem’s internal cache or errors due to high usage time (in fact it is good practice to restart the modem at least once a month).
  • reset the modem: It can be a wise choice to reset the modem to its initial settings, but only if we have an operator modem or have a backup of the modem settings.
  • change modem: if the modem is too old it may be a good idea to replace it with a new one, as seen in guide to new generation modems to buy.

5) Advanced codes for connection restoration

If the internet is still completely absent even after applying all the simple methods, we have to move on to the hard ways. Even if on Windows the computer is reported as connectedthen you can try the following operation.

We open the Command Prompt as administrator (from the Start menu search for cmd, right click on it and Run as administrator) and copy the following commands, pressing Enter after each of them.

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

Alternatively we can apply another network trick to restore correct functioning by pressing the Windows + R keys on the keyboard, writing Regedt32.exe in the dialog box and pressing Sending, so as to open Registry Editor. Navigating the key tree, expand the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

In the right pane of this location, create the following DWORD type registry key by right-clicking:

EnableTCPChimney = 0
EnableTCPA = 0
EnableRSS = 0

Once the changes have been made, press OK and restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Conclusions

Connection problems they can be very numerous but the most striking ones can be resolved in no timeso as to restore correct operation without contacting theassistance from the telephone operator (which in some situations may be unavoidable).
