If the PC is making too much noise, reduce the fan speed

If our computer becomes too noisy during operation, the causes can be numerous and we will have to investigate thoroughly we will necessarily have to remove the PC panel and investigate inside. The components that can generate noise are: the CPU fan, the video card fans, the power supply fan, and the motherboard fans.In the guide that follows we will show you how to reduce the speed of fans that make too much noise, so as not to be deafened by too loud noises. If the noise continues it is necessary to consider a thorough cleaning of all the fans or their replacement with newer and more performing models.

Clean all the fans on the computer

If we have never done it or it has been a long time since the last cleaning, it is better to arm ourselves with a cylinder of compressed air and gently blow on the fans on the PC, so as to free them from the dust and dirt that has remained trapped.

We buy a cylinder of compressed air suitable for use on the PC on Amazon, remove the power plug, touch a metal object to discharge the static electricity, put on gloves and, after opening the side panel of the fixed PC, we blow with compressed air on the CPU fan, case fans, and video card fans.

The power supply fan is not visible inside the case, as it is located at the bottom of the case; we lift the computer and blow compressed air on the power supply fan to remove all traces of dust.

On laptops, disassembly is often too complex to be done without the help of a professional: in this case it is better to just blow some compressed air into the fan grill (usually positioned on the left side), so as to blow some dust away.

Change PC fan speed

If even after cleaning the fans still make noise, we will have to try to change the rotation speed of the fans, choosing a slower speed but sufficient to keep the operating temperatures within a certain limit (otherwise everything will melt!).


The first method to change the fan speed on your PC is to use the advanced BIOS / UEFI settings. To proceed we perform the procedure for enter the BIOS / UEFI of ours PC and identify the menu to adjust the fan speed.

Once we have identified the menu to control the speed of the fans, we try to set the minimum speed required or to set the automatic speed for all the fans on the PC.

For better results we can also set UEFI for energy saving: we identify the performance menu of the motherboard and choose the energy saving, so as to slightly reduce the speed of the CPU and other components and consequently decrease the speed of the fans.


The most famous program for monitoring computer heat and temperature is SpeedFandownloadable for free for Windows.

This program also offers real-time fan speed control on some motherboards, which we can adjust according to need and the amount of noise we can handle. It is not certain that all fans are recognized by the program but, in any case, it is easy to see which ones can be configured, those that show a speed in RPM greater than 0.

The program also shows the temperature of the main components: when we make adjustments, make sure that the “flame” never appears next to the hardware components, otherwise we risk damage in the long run.

To adjust the speed of the fans on the video card (another significant source of noise) we can use the program MSI Afterburneravailable for free download for Windows and compatible with a large number of video cards (even those not produced by MSI).

After installing MSI AfterBurner we can check, in the lower part of the interface, the current speed of the fan or fans on the video card; in normal conditions the automatic mode is configured, but if the video card makes noise it is better to unlock the manual settings.

To proceed, click on the button Settingsenter the settings and, in the fans tab, press on Enable the automatic control software. A graph will appear below, which can be changed by moving the squares, showing the speed of the video card fans depending on the temperature reached.

We can thus configure the fan to rotate more slowly when working on light programs and the video card is used at minimum and a higher speed if you are using video games or programs that use the video card for hardware acceleration. Wanting you could too lower the frequency of the GPU processor in the main interface.

Software per overclock CPU and GPU

The software dedicated to the overclocking of the internal components can also be used to reduce the speed of the fans, applying the so-called underclocki.e. a decrease in the performance of the components to reduce the heat emitted (and consequently the speed of the fans).

The best overclocking programs that we can use on a Windows PC are:

  • Intel Extreme Tuning Utility: essential software for overclocking and underclocking Intel processors.
  • Intel Performance Maximizer: another valid program to underclock modern Intel CPUs.
  • AMD Radeon WattMan: great tool for overclocking and underclocking AMD processors; this tool is included within the driver AMD.
  • EVGA Precision X1: powerful tool designed to overclock video cards; we can also use it to decrease the fan speed on the GPU.

However, when making changes to the fan speed it is always necessary to check, at least for a while, the temperature to make sure that the components are not cooled adequately anyway. It is also necessary to pay attention to the summer period, because higher levels of general temperature always have an impact on the PC.
