Instagram: beware of reshare, test recent content, Earth Day stickers

The photo-sharing of Meta (Facebook) starts at the weekend with a lot of news which, in the past few hours, in addition to the many and usual last-minute rumors, has officially announced the launch of various initiatives, including a test concerning recent content, and the modification of algorithms to favor the originality of those who create what they share from scratch.

The first series of news in Instagram share arrives in official form, thanks to a series of interventions, via tweets, by its CEO, Adam Mosseri. Specifically, after the mention of the launch of novelties (indeed already introduced, albeit recently), such as the provision of the product tag (to companies enabled to shop on the platform) in favor of all public accounts of ordinary people in the USA, and the advanced tag system, to highlight the contribution to your post by other creators, a modification to the algorithms has been announced, in the Feed and in the Reels tab, to favor the original content over the reposted ones.

This will involve, to recognize the original content, the use of classifiers, which help to predict the probable originality of a content, but also the analysis of who is in the video, or if the clip has already been seen in the app: As a result of the new change, the platform’s hints and tips system will be less likely to recommend Reels that are already on the app and, with the aim of scaling down the overrated reach of aggregators, there will be less chance of being recommended accounts that they make the aggregation and re-sharing of other people’s content their strength.

Again in the form of official communications, but elsewhere, the confirmation of the launch of a test has arrived, valid for a small number of people, who will see a change in the experience of using the hashtag page. Here, to date, there are the “Top” tabs. “Reels”, and “Recent”: The nature of the test requires the Recent tab to be removed, with the Reels and Top tabs showing more relevant and recent content.

In motivating the launch of the experiment in question (“see if this helps people connect with more interesting and relevant content on hashtags, while keeping them updated on what is current”), the platform specified that, on the page of hashtag, there will also be the “Spread the Word” button that will allow you to share the hashtag page as a message in the DMs, while the “Create a fundraiser” button will serve to raise awareness of a given cause , simplifying the launch of a fundraiser in favor of a given cause.

The second round of news, once again official, was instead communicated by the parent company Meta, and concerns the initiatives conceived for April 22, Earth Day. For the occasion, Menlo Park confirmed its commitment to fighting disinformation on climate change, and promised to support climate research and water restoration projects, as well as Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Catalyst Project. , which involves the use of AI to discover and model new catalysts to meet energy needs in the context of climate change. On Meta Quest, it will be possible to use the company’s VR viewers to visit areas affected by climate change, and to learn about animals subject to the risk of extinction, while in the social Facebook it is possible to adopt frames that show adherence to the cause. On Instagram, the protagonist of this short recap, Menlo Park will instead bring themed stickers designed by the illustrator Ping Zhu.

Last but not least, the rumors. According to the leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is working to introduce the topics (topics) on Reels, on the option “Show QR code”, which will show the code in question on the profile to easily add the user, and on the Chat sticker for members (to be displayed only in favor of those who have an active fan club).
