You can hide the Task View, Widgets, and Search icons on the taskbar in Windows 11 or turn them off entirely

Rimuovere Widget Windows 11

The most significant changes in Windows 11 compared to all previous versions are certainly the Start menu, completely redesigned, and also the taskbar. The latter, although apparently similar to that of Windows 7 and Windows 10, is instead very different in how it works. You can immediately notice, for example, that by clicking on it with the right button no menu appears anymore, but only a link to the settings.

However, this is also possible in the Windows 11 taskbar fix the icons to launch your favorite programs which you can remove by pressing them with the right button. The difference with Windows 10 is that they are there some icons that cannot be removed with the simple right mouse button, but they require a change to the settings.

These are the icons for searching, viewing activities and then the new buttons widget which did not exist in Windows 10. These buttons, which always appear on the taskbar after installing Windows 11, can be removed if they are not used.

1) Hide the taskbar buttons

Windows taskbar

Windows 11 allows you to choose whether to display or hide the 4 default buttons, those of Widget, Activity view e Research.

To do this, just press the right mouse button on an empty area of the taskbar and then open the Taskbar settings. You can also reach that options menu by opening Settings from the Start menu and then going to Personalization > Taskbar.

From here, it’s easy to use the toggles to turn off the 4 default items and then choose to remove Widgets, Search, and Task View.

However, removing these icons does not mean removing these functions from the system. For example, if we already know that we will never use Windows 11 chat or if we really don’t like widgets, we can not only remove the buttons, but also uninstall or block these features.

Excluding the search and activity viewer which are internal functions of the system, let’s see how uninstall and disable widgets and chat in Windows 11 (although you can always go back and reactivate them whenever you want).

2) Permanently deactivate widgets

If we want to ensure that the widgets are no longer displayed and can be reactivated from the taskbar settings, we can permanently turn them off by changing the Windows 11 registry keys (being very careful not to make mistakes).

Then open the registry key editor by searching for it on the Start menu and starting it as administrator. On the top bar of the Registry window, paste the following path:

Right-click on the folder Microsoft in the left side of the window and select New > Key to create a new named key Dsh.

Select now Dshmove to the right side of the window, right-click on an empty space and select New > DWORD 32 bit to create a new named value AllowNewsAndInterests and value 0.

At this point, you will no longer be able to activate the widget function in Windows 11 even from the settings.

To reactivate the Widgets, simply return to the registry editor, to the key Dshand change the value of AllowNewsAndInterests in 1.

In Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise you can also disable widgets from Group Policy. Then open group policies from the Start menu (search for criteria o gpedit and you will find this tool) and, on the left side, expand the folders according to this path:

Configurazione computer > Modelli amministrativi > Componenti di Windows > Widgets

Now press on Allow Widgets to change the option Not configured in Deactivated.

Use Windows Terminal

Alternatively we can also disable widgets using Terminal, the enhanced Windows “prompt” capable of making profound changes to the system; given the nature of the changes made below we always recommend create a restore point.

To disable widgets on Windows 11 we open the Start menu, search Terminalright-click on it, click on Run as administrator and launch the following command:

# Remove the installed package for each user
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "*WebExperience*"} | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

With this we will remove all the widgets present on the PC, for all users present. If we instead wanted to remove the widgets only for the current user, the command to use is the following:

Get-AppxPackage | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "*WebExperience*"} | Remove-AppxPackage

If, however, we wanted to prevent adding widgets to new users who will be created on Windows 11, the command to use is the following:

$AppxRemoval = Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Where-Object {$_.PackageName -like "*WebExperience*"}
ForEach ( $App in $AppxRemoval) {
    Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName $App.PackageName

Now we will have truly removed all traces of widgets on our Windows installation.

The methods seen above will allow you to remove annoying widgets and also remove items unnecessary present in the bottom bar of Windows 11, so as to make the experience even cleaner and without distractions (which is necessary if the computer is used for work).
