What it looks like and what are the main features of the Asus RT-AXE7800 WiFi 6E router.
The first models of WiFi 6E routers, therefore capable of managing the 6 GHz band as well as the frequencies on 2.4 and 5 GHz, they were rather bulky.
The Asus RT-AXE7800 WiFi 6E router, on the other hand, even manages to integrate a 2.5 GbE port despite its small size (measuring 24 x 22 x 15 cm).
Next to the 2.5GbE port, which can act as both WAN and LAN port, Asus RT-AXE7800 it offers a total of 4 other Ethernet ports: one 1 GbE WAN/LAN and three other more traditional LAN ports.
The 1 GbE port and LAN2 can optionally be “coupled” to activate link aggregation functionality using the protocollo 802.3ad.
On the two doors you can enable the techniques LAN aggregation e WAN aggregation per increase bandwidth and improve network performance.
The WAN aggregation refers to the technique of using multiple WAN connections simultaneously with the potential to extend available bandwidth and improve connection resilience.
The term LAN aggregationon the other hand, means the technique of combining multiple LAN connections into one virtual connection.
What the Asus RT-AXE7800 router looks like
Like the rest of the Asus WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E routers, the RT-AXE7800 uses the ASUSWRT firmware which offers a robust web UI, a process of standard configuration and a number of useful network settings and features. As we saw in our article on WiFi router security, Asus is one of the few manufacturers that doesn’t force you to use a mobile app in order to router configuration: the user always remains the owner of his device and can configure it in the traditional way simply using the browser, without having to install anything.
Shaped like a hexagon, the RT-AXE7800 router is a device based on a 1.7GHz quad-core CPU, 256MB of flash, 512MB of RAM, a tri band (we have seen the differences between dual band, tri band and quad band routers) which, as previously mentioned, allows you to manage up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz (4×4 AX with channel width 20/ 40/80/160 MHz), 2402 Mbps on 6 GHz (2×2 WiFi 6E with channel width 20/40/80/160 MHz).
Hence the name of the router: the number 7800 present in the name of the model derives from the sum of the maximum band theoretically available on the various frequencies (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz). There Acronym AXhowever, indicates that the router not only adheres to the WiFi 6 specifications but also supports the 6 GHz band introduced with WiFi 6E.
The most interesting features of the Asus RT-AXE7800 router
AiMesh support. A feature also expected in other more modern Asus routers, AiMesh transforms multiple autonomous routers into a robust mesh WiFi system: RT-AXE7800 can function as a main router or satellite node with any of the company’s other compatible devices. To get the better performancehowever, as we have highlighted in other articles, it is good to use the backhaul wired, via Ethernet cable.
QoS (Quality of Service) adaptive. Common feature in Asus routers of the same category, it allows you to manage the traffic prioritization quickly and effectively in order to reserve more bandwidth for work applications, multimedia streaming, gaming or any other need.
Free dynamic DNS. RT-AXE7800 supports all existing DDNS (Dynamic DNS) services. Asus provides its DDNS for free with an “ad hoc” domain name. In this way it is possible to always reach the router installed at home or in the office and remotely connect to the services on your network infrastructure, even when you are not using a static IP address and the IP changes with each connection (it is assigned dynamically by the provider Internet). Asus also provides a free digital certificate to activate HTTPS and exchange data in total security.
Universal configuration settings. On the RT-AXE7800 it is possible to restore the backup files of most previous WiFi 6 and 6E routers: it is an excellent way to switch to a modern, high-performance and complete device without having to reconfigure the network settings from scratch.
Flexible and versatile port configuration. We wrote this before: the router has one 2.5Gbps WAN port and one 1Gbps WAN port (which works as LAN1 by default). One of the two can still be configured as a WAN port while the other as a LAN.
It is possible to combine ports in configuration link aggregation: By “joining” the WAN port and LAN2 port, you can create a single 2 Gbps broadband connection.
When the 2.5Gbps port is configured as a WAN port, the LAN1 and LAN2 ports can be combined to create a 2Gbps LAN Aggregation.
Thanks to the support Dual-WANyou can use one of the WAN ports (2.5 Gbps WAN or LAN1 port) to host a broadband connection and another LAN port (or the USB port, think about the possibility of using memory sticks to connect to the network mobile) to host another at the same time.
Wide choice of VPN side. RT-AXE7800 router can work as server VPN supporting the vast majority of VPN protocols.
Among the various options offered there is also VPN Fusion: Allows connection to multiple VPN servers at the same time allowing you to assign client devices to different VPN tunnels as needed. It also provides VPN connectivity to your home network without installing VPN software. It is also offered Instant Guarda special VPN server for mobile devices.
Integrated online parental control. For the entire life cycle of the router, Asus provides AiProtection e Parent Control: these are two features that add further value to the hardware by offering privacy protection, safe browsing and parental controls, to prevent the little ones from visiting inappropriate websites or spending too much time on the Internet.
Traffic Analyzer. Like other ASUSWRT-based routers, RT-AXE7800 also includes a powerful module useful for traffic monitoring network: in this way it is possible to understand, in real time, what is happening on the network, which devices are exchanging data with the possibility of increasing or reducing the bandwidth available to them, configuring “ad hoc” rules, modifying the QoS settings.
Performance at the highest level
The configuration of the Ethernet ports gives you plenty of leeway and allows for support, without the introduction of bottlenecksof connections ultrabroadband up to 2.5Gbps.
Talking about WiFi performance, RT-AXE7800 provides uncompromising performance, especially on the 5 GHz band; does not show disconnections; it offers good coverage managing to serve well environments with a surface area of up to about 200 m22provided that the physical location of the router is chosen carefully (in the center of the building).
It must be said that on the band of 6 GHzthe coverage is much smaller: generally, if there are no obstacles between the router and the client, the latter can be reached without problems up to 22-25 meters but behind a wall or two, the maximum distance does not even reach half .
