Scarlett Johansson, legal action against AI apps that clone her

As reported by Variety, Scarlett Johansson is taking legal action against an app developer from Artificial intelligence for using his name and image in an online advertisement.

The offending ad promotes an AI image editor, called Lisa AI, and features an AI-generated version of Johansson’s voice as it unfolds. The commercial, lasting approximately 22 seconds, shows the famous actress behind the scenes of the filming of Black Widow.

In the advert, she uttered the phrase “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me” all with impressive realism, which demonstrates the potential of this software.

In the star advertisement, Variety reports that the app’s developer, i.e Convert Softwarehas included a textual part in which a sort of disclaimer is proposed, in which it is specified that the proposed scene was created by Lisa AI and that it is in no way connected to the real person.

Scarlett Johansson’s lawyer speaks out on the incident

In any case, the actress has made it known through her lawyers how she has never given any type of permission to use her figure and how her lawyers are moving accordingly.

Per Kevin YornScarlett Johansson’s lawyer, stated how “We don’t take these things lightly. As per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will address this matter with all legal remedies available to us“. At the moment Convert Software has not released any statements regarding what happened.

As AI becomes more and more easily accessible, we will see many more cases like this in the future. Musicians have already been fighting similar cases for a few months, without taking into account the potential, in some cases frightening, of the deepfake (just think of the cases of Tom Hanks e MrBeast).

One thing is for sure: if AI appears to be a potential threat to some jobs, it could be a real “gold mine” for many lawyers.
