Sightful Spacetop: the notebook without a display that uses augmented reality

The company founded by two top managers of Magic Leap presents its first product: it is an innovative laptop that has no traditional screen and offers the user a 100-inch screen, simply by putting on the glasses included.

According to the creators of the new Sightful Spacetop, laptops have one problem: their screen. There is only one, it is too small, it is usually positioned too far from the eyes and what is displayed on the screen can be easily read by those who, for example, are sitting next to it during a train or plane journey.

Tamir Berliner e Tomer Kahan, due ex top manager at Magic Leapa company founded in 2010 with the aim of creating and developing advanced augmented reality technologies that integrate elements of the real world with virtual elements in order to offer immersive and interactive experiences, have unveiled the first commercial product of their new company , Sightful.

Spacetop is a device designed primarily for i business travellers who want a laptop with a huge private “display” that no one else can see. In practice, it looks like a keyboard to which augmented reality glasses are combined: once worn, a huge curved virtual monitor (diagonal equal to 100 inches) appears in front of the user.

Windows of running apps, such as Word, Teams, Gmail, etc., can be “pinned” and resized on the virtual screen. A simulation of the result obtainable using Spacetop and putting on the enclosed goggles can be seen on the manufacturer’s official website.

Based on a processor Arm optimized and on a customized version of AndroidSpacetop is currently being delivered to a small number of users which will allow Sightful to gather valuable feedback for future products.

Compared to a viewer like Meta Quest Pro of Meta, Spacetop offers glasses that feel both lighter and sharper than those provided by the company led by Mark Zuckerberg. Text is perfectly legible, with a general setting specially designed to reduce eye strain.

Particularly commendable is the fact that the glasses that come with the Spacetop support interpupillary distances between 56 mm and 70 mm: each subject is different from the other and the Sightful technicians have correctly taken this into account.

Except for its unusual silhouette, the Spacetop’s chassis doesn’t look all that different from that of a conventional laptop, at least at the bottom. Sightful built its augmented reality notebook around an SoC Snapdragon 865 of 2019. There is therefore ample room for improvement: Sightful has not chosen, for example, the more advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The others hardware specifications include 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage; the form is also present WiFi 6the support 5G NR Sub-6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support. The system also integrates a webcam 2560 x 1920 pixels, which is slightly better than what other laptops offer, as well as a fingerprint reader. There are also two pairs porte USB-C 10 Gbps with DisplayPort 1.4 functionality: it is therefore possible in any case to connect a external monitor.
