Snapchat: Family Center and Communities under development

Soon, parental control will be integrated into Snapchat through what has turned out to be a future Family Center: the ghost platform, however, also has its own version of the Communities in store.
Snapchat: Family Center and Communities under development

The wave of innovations from Snapchat continues which, having now put in place personalized reference points and the sharing of clothes for Bitmoji, has already turned the page, working on the development for the future of the Communities and its Family Center with a view to parental control.

In recent months, several parents have protested against Snapchat, as Evan Spiegel’s platform did not suppress drug trade enough between its pages, resulting in many of their children having died from drug overdoses, eg. fentanyl, bought (as well as on the dark web) right on Snapchat. The requests were that they collaborate with third-party companies for parental control but, at the time, Snap Inc, after having however released tools that hampered the drug trade on Snapchat, announced that, to avoid sharing the data with third parties deprived of its users, it had on its roadmap the realization of internal solutions of “family involvement”.

In the course of the recent Tech Live meeting organized by the Wall Street Journal, in this regard, CEO Evan Spiegel not only underlined the already good starting point of his platform (which does not market the service to children under 13 and which is more secure intrinsically given that by default it sets profiles as private), but also confirmed the commitment to parental control that emerged in the past months, explaining that, while not being able to name the function yet, they are working on a hub that will not only offer parents tools for controlling the privacy of their children, perhaps being able to set who they can talk to or not with, but also ways to know how adolescents use its platform, also to provide – in an educational key – opportunities for intergenerational dialogue so that for example, parents can guide their children “through some of the difficulties that arise from the use of social media, how to deal with uncomfortable situations, what to do and if a stranger contacts you, for example “.

Waiting for Snap Inc to return to the topic of parental control in the near future, on which the newly hired security manager, Jacqueline Beauchere (formerly of Microsoft, where she also dealt with online security) is working, other details are coming from the world of leakers. , with the leaker Alessandro Paluzzi who not only anticipated the name of the parental control hub, “Family Center”, but also its presentation screen, in which it is explained that parents will be able to view who their children have messaged with in the last 24 hours and who their children’s friends are.

Finally, from the same leaker, the rumor has come that Snapchat is working, through mockups for internal use, on its own system of Communities (of which, for now, it is not possible to add or create).
