After conquering iOS and macOS users, the browser Arc also officially lands on Windows. Designed to change the way users browse the web, according to The Browser Company this has everything it takes to convince Windows users to abandon Edge and especially Chrome. «Arc is so relaxing, and keeps you organized. It helps you better manage your tasks during the day», explains Hursh Agrawal, co-founder of The Browser Company.
The novelty of Arc that immediately catches the eye is the sidebar which eliminates the chaos of many open tabs. But it can also be hidden, so as to leave space for the website you are visiting. Another advantage is that its rendering engine is Chromium (now the web standard), so it is possible to also bring with you the extensions used on Chrome.
The version of Arc for Windows it was built completely on macOS, with Swift. Saleem Abdulrasool, software engineer at The Browser Company, has been working to bring Swift to Microsoft’s platform for over six years. «I am very excited. To see something come to fruition after so many years is truly amazing», he declared to The Verge.
Obviously, Arc has the obligation to be high-performance and unique in its exclusive features in order to really compete with Chrome. In this regard, according to Darin Fisher (from 2022 in The Browser Company) this could be a particularly favorable moment because of some sort of immobility of Chrome and similar. For Fisher, Arc could follow the example of Chrome, which stole users from Internet Explorer by taking advantage of its “no” moment.
Launching on Windows 11 is just the first step. The company indeed promises new features to further enrich the user experience. The Mac version allows customization of web pages by changing the color palette and the use of AI functions, and these are currently absent in the Windows client. As already highlighted above, however, the main features are already available, such as the sidebar, Spaces, profiles and split-view and picture-in-picture modes.
