Unable to create restore point on Windows: how to fix

We can no longer create a restore point on Windows? Let’s see together how to resolve and restore this important function

Unable to create restore points

Restore points are very important to be able to restore Windows on the fly when the system stops working, we have contracted a virus or we have noticed an excessive slowdown for which we cannot identify the problem.

It may happen that the recovery system stops working, making it impossible to create new restore points or load existing restore points, effectively making this very effective security system useless. Often this error appears with the writing “0x80042306“, a sign that something serious has happened with the recovery system. Although not always easy, this problem can be solved.

1) Clear disk space

The first cause of problems with restore points is the lack of space on C:, i.e. the disk where system files, programs and even recovery files are saved.

To immediately do a good cleaning, open the Start menu and type cleanmgrwe select theC drive:check all the items present and press on at the bottom OK to start the correct cleaning of Windows; if general cleaning is not sufficient we can also press the button Cleaning system filesalso tick the new items present and press on OK for even more thorough cleaning.

On the same topic we can read our guide on how to do full disk cleanup on windows.

2) Check startup recovery services

If the restore didn’t work we can try check Windows servicesverifying that the service necessary for the system to function is started correctly.

To proceed we open the Start menu, search for and open the app Servicesscroll through the list and right-click on the items Volume shadow copy come on Provider di copie shadow software Microsoft.

From the window that opens, make sure to set Startup type are Automatic and press on Start to start the service immediately; we perform the same operation for both of the items indicated previously.

3) Manually register recovery services

If the two services indicated above do not work or do not start we can restore them manually by pressing the Start menu, searching notepadopening the Block notes and copying the following strings:

cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
vssvc /register
net start swprv
net start vss

After copying these strings we press CTRL+SHIFT+S to save as, select All files in the field Save aswe choose as the file name VSS.bat and finally click on Salva.

To correct restore points on Windows, right-click on the file VSS.bat just created, click on Run as administratorwe click on Yes and, after execution, we restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

4) Run clean boot recovery

Another valid trick to correct restore points on Windows involves starting the procedure for creating the points in question using clean boot.

To start Windows in this mode we press WIN+R on the keyboard, we type msconfiglet’s get the voice out Diagnostic startwe click on OK and confirm the restart. Upon reboot Let’s create a new restore point; if the system works it will probably always work now, given that we have started all the Windows services without external interference and without programs and it will be enough to restart the PC to restore the correct start of the system.

We can continue reading on this topic in the guide above How to fix clean boot windows problems.

5) Restore damaged Windows files

If none of the previous methods worked, open the Start menu and search cmdwe right click on Command Promptpress Run as administrator and immediately launch the following command:

SFC /scannow

Let the scan finish to restore any damaged system files. As a further file recovery system we can also launch, again from Prompt, the following commands:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

At the end of the restores we restart the system for the changes to take effect. On SFC and DSIM we can read our guides on how to repair corrupted system files on Windows 11 and 10 and how to repair Windows system files with DISM.
