Use the Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP) app in Windows 11

To remotely control a Windows 11 PC, you can use the built-in Remote Desktop or RDP app.

For remote control of computers we often rely on external programs such as TeamViewer, a valid software which however has limitations at account level and does not allow you to use the free account in a professional context. If we want to control computers remotely without using external programs we can rely on the systems provided by Microsoft itself, which has been developing the RDP protocol (for remote connections) for several years and also provides a remote assistance system that is very simple to configure and use .

In the following guide we will show you how to use remote desktop on windows 11, showing you how to use Quick Assistance (for novice users and great for remotely controlling the PCs of friends, colleagues or relatives) and finally how to set up RDP Remote Desktop (professional tool). The steps that we show you are also valid on Windows 10, just rely on the Start menu to find the same programs and the same items.

How to use Quick Help

The simplest and most immediate tool to use to remotely control other PCs is Quick assistanceavailable as an app within the Start menu.

By opening the app we will have a simple window divided into two parts: in the section Request assistance we can ask for help from an expert friend or assistant by entering his assistance code (in the field Assistant code) and pressing the button Share screenso as to provide the necessary permissions to remotely control our computer.

In the section Offer assistance it is useful if we are the IT experts: by pressing on Help another person we will obtain our assistant code, to communicate to the person to whom we offer assistance. As soon as the person we are providing assistance to presses on Share screen we will see the remote desktop appear and we will be able to use our keyboard and mouse to control your computer.

There are no particular requirements to use Quick Assistance: the computers just need to be connected to the Internet and have Windows 10 or Windows 11 as the operating system.

How to use RDP remote desktop

The remote control tool present for many versions on Windows is RDPAlso known as Desktop remoto o Remote desktop connection. This tool is very powerful but not very suitable for novice users, who can easily use Quick Assistance for most needs.

To be able to control a computer remotely with RDP it must be installed on it a Professional or Enterprise version of Windows 10 or Windows 11otherwise it will not be possible to establish any remote connection. If we don’t know the version of Windows we have, we can read our guide. Check which version of Windows and which computer I’m using.

If we are in the office or need to control the computers present in our LAN network, first let’s go to the computer we want to control, then let’s go to the Start menu, press on Settingslet’s get into the menu Systemclick on the menu Desktop remoto and we activate the voice Desktop remotoalso expanding the menu below and placing a check mark on the item Require devices to use Network Level Authentication to connect.

In the same window we take note of the port number he was born in PC nameso we recover theIP address of the computer to be monitored and the credentials of the Microsoft account associated with the computer.

In the screen that opens, activate the button under the item Enable Remote Desktop and let’s get the voices out Keep my PC alive for connections when connected to the mains e Make my PC discoverable on private networks to enable automatic connection from a remote device. From the same screen, write down the name of the PC, to be used during configuration on the other devices on the network.

To increase the security of the connections we press on the item Advanced settings and let’s raise the voice Require the computer to use Network Level Authentication to connectso you can log in with the same credentials used on the account on the PC.

Now that we have all the information, let’s go to the computer to use for the remote desktop, open the Start menu, look for the app Remote desktop connectionenter the IP and port number in the field provided and, when prompted, enter the Windows account credentials to access the PC and control it remotely.

Alternatively we can also use the app Microsoft Remote Desktopavailable for free from the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

After installing and opening the app we can add the desktops to control by pressing on the top Add -> PCindicating the PC name or IP address of the device (in the field PC name), by pressing the + button (next to User accounts) to add the Microsoft account associated with the remote computer, choosing an easy-to-display name (in the field Visualized name) and finally pressing on Salva.

With this app we can also add more PCs to control, given that all the computers on which we have logged in at least once will appear in the home page, ready to be controlled remotely at any time.

Access Microsoft Remote Desktop from another PC

After enabling remote access on the PC to be controlled, let’s go to another PC with Windows 10 present in the same LAN network, open the Start menu and open the app Remote Desktop Connectionwhich we can find on any version of Windows 10 (therefore also on the Home versions).

Once the app is open, type the name of the computer to be checked (using both capital letters and any hyphens), press Connect and, in the new screen, enter the name of the local account or the Microsoft account present on the remote PC, type the relevant password and finally press OK. If we want to control the remote PC from a smartphone or tablet with Android operating system, an iPhone or an iPad, make sure that the device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer, then download the app Remote Desktop di Microsoft per Android o iPhone.

When opened, the app will immediately show the PCs that we can control remotely and reachable in the same LAN network; if the remote computer does not appear we can always add it manually by pressing + at the top and typing the name of the PC (as seen in the previous chapters).

Once we have identified the remote PC to be controlled, we press on it, type in the access password and choose whether to remember it or not: in a few seconds we will have access to the PC screen directly on the tablet or phone screen, so as to be able to manage simplicity the applications on the PC.

How to troubleshoot Remote Desktop

If remote desktop does not work or we cannot access a specific computer, we always check the version of Windows on the computer to be controlled remotely: only the Pro versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 include this functionality, while with the Home version we can only control other computers.

Another problem that prevents the correct use of remote desktop is access: to be on the safe side we log in only to computers with registered Microsoft accounts, avoiding local accounts. To adjust the Windows firewall we open the Start menu, type Windows Firewallwe open the first useful search result and click on the item Allow apps or features through Windows Defender Firewallwe press on Change settingswe scroll through the list until we find the item Desktop remoto Microsoft and make sure that the two boxes under the columns are checked Private e Publish. To confirm, press on OK and restart the computer.


The Windows remote desktop function presents itself as a good alternative to remote control programs such as TeamViewer, since it only works on the same LAN network (no data goes outside) and can be quickly configured on any computer.
