Windows 11 SE: what it is and how it can actually launch executable files too

When the Microsoft operating system was born, not only was there no cloud but not even the Internet was available. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a global project based on the use of hypertexts, later known as the World Wide Web, while only in 1995 did Bill Gates foresee the modern Internet and describe its characteristics.

While i Chromebook they were born from a company, Google, which was born in the “network of networks”, Microsoft did not have a similar operating system. Also because, perhaps, he never had an interest in creating it. The various features cloud, like OneDrive and Microsoft 365, have become an integral part of Windows over time and today their use is proposed and “solicited” even during the final phase of installation of the operating system. The Windows 365 Cloud project aims to make an instance of the operating system usable, through the cloud, from any device with a modest hardware configuration.

Windows S already existed, a special edition of the operating system that allows you to install and use only apps from Microsoft Store (among other things, it can also be updated to complete editions). However, to date, there has not been a truly cloud-focused edition of Windows.

What is Windows 11 SE and what are its features

Microsoft explains that Windows 11 SE is a platform created both for teachers who need a simple, distraction-free environment, also for the benefit of users, and to provide school IT administrators with secure devices that are easy to deploy and manage.

Compared to traditional editions of Windows, Windows 11 SE integrates a simplified user interface, control of installed apps only by IT administrators, the inability for users to access the Microsoft Store or download apps from the Internet, integration and direct interaction of the Desktop, Documents and Photos system folders with the OneDrive cloud. Windows 11 SE supports all Web applications and a select list of desktop programs – this is an admittedly platform cloud-first.

Andrew Enderman, in a video recently published on YouTube, however managed to demonstrate that some of the restrictions imposed in Windows 11 SE can still be overcome.

E-mode imposes a series of even more restrictive limitations

First of all, the so-called E-fashion It is configured as an addition to Windows S. It is in fact a filter additional and even more severe for women applications executable on the Windows system. The “switch” that enables the E-fashion it is the value EmodePolicyRequiredenclosed in the key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Policy of the system registry.

As explained, for example, in the article dedicated to how to recover the forgotten Windows 10 password, it is possible to force the loading of the Windows 11 SE system registry, installed on the machine, then change the DWORD value EmodePolicyRequired setting it to 0.

According to Enderman, who provided proven proof of his work, the filters imposed by E-fashion however, they can be overcome by deleting all files Code Integrity Policy (.cip) from the EFI partition in use on your system. Specifically, removing the contents of the directory EFI\Microsoft\Boot\CIPolicies\Activethe system remains in “SE” mode but it becomes possible, for example, to start any executable.

The only “annoyance” comes from the fact that File Explorer it does not allow access to the entire file system (e.g. the C: drive) allowing use of the contents of that handful of authorized folders (e.g. Desktop, Documents and Photos). However, this is a limitation that makes sense precisely because Windows 11 SE is an operating system created to work on the cloud.
