Google reaches agreement with US government to avoid prosecution

Google has found a way to resolve a lawsuit initiated by United States Department of Justice last January.

The procedure referred to some advertising and non-advertising conduct of the giant Mountain View deemed by the American government as anti-competitive e illegal. To avoid the actual trial, yesterday Google agreed to compensate the Department, thus putting an end to the dispute.

The company, for its part, has always denied the accusations, maintaining that competition in the advertising sector is strongly increasing and that Google has always followed the current regulations. Furthermore, the company underlined that, precisely in such a competitive sector, governments should not be involved in the challenge between companies.

Regarding the resolution of the dispute, however, Google has recognized how to pay the damage in advance it can be more convenient both economically and in terms of image. But what amount are we talking about?

The amount proposed by Google to repay the months of investigations by the Department of Justice appears to be just under a million dollars. A figure which, although it may seem enormous for an ordinary citizen, is very low for a technological giant.

Not only that: precisely to cope with the numerous lawsuitsGoogle (and other technology companies) set aside a specific fund, useful for resolving any disputes.

Despite this, it is not a given that the American government will accept the damages and close the procedure. Second Mark Lemleyprofessor at Stanford Law School, the amount requested could actually be much higher. At the moment the Department of Justice has not released official communications on the matter.

As already mentioned, it is certainly neither the first nor the last time that Google finds itself dealing with the courts. Just a few weeks ago, for example, the French authorities imposed a fine from 250 million euros to society because of how AI is powered Gemini.
