App Store, Apple changes its mind: cloud gaming on iPhone and iPad also via apps

What we are witnessing in these hours is a sort of Revolution not only for Apple, but also for users who use iPhone and/or iPad as their primary devices. For European Union countries, for example, the Cupertino company has announced that with iOS 17.4 it will be possible to download applications from third-party marketplaces. M there is also news regarding all markets in which the tech giant operates.

With a note released on the portal dedicated to developers, Apple announces that from now on on the App Store there is also room for cloud gaming applicationscome GeForce NOW e Xbox Cloud Gaming. To access the two services just mentioned, previously you had to rely on a web browser due to the limitations imposed by the Californian company.

«Developers can now submit a single app with the ability to stream all games in their catalog», we read in the note. «Apps hosting this content must ensure that the software included in their application meets Apple’s high standards for user experience and security».

The focus is on a single sentence (“a single app with the ability to stream all the games in their catalog“), because – in fact – it represents a clear change of direction compared to the recent past. In fact, until recently, cloud gaming services did not have an easy life on the App Store because the guidelines required them the sending and review of every single game present in the respective catalogues. Hence the decision of Microsoft, NVIDIA and – at the time – Google (with Stadia) to get around the obstacle by relying on the web browser.

The Cupertino company then states that, thanks to the change described above, developers now have the possibility to introduce not only new video games in streaming, but also mini-apps, chatbots and plug-ins that are integrated into their applications.

As of this writing, neither Microsoft nor NVIDIA have announced anything new regarding their cloud gaming platforms.
