Cowriter: artificial intelligence also in Windows Notepad

It’s no secret: 2024 will be the year ofartificial intelligence. Strongly integrated also at the operating system level. After the announcement of the introduction of the Copilot key in new keyboards, useful for quickly activating the digital assistant, Microsoft is linking the technology developed together with OpenAI to Windows. And the addition of the functionality is a bit surprising Cowriter to the new Notepad, a system application that has remained unchanged for many years and which today enjoys a second youth.

What is Cowriter and what abilities does it add to Windows Notepad

One of the newest preview releases of the Block notes for Windows 11, shows “a taste” of the Cowriter functionality. It is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to rewrite the text, make it shorter or longer, change the “tone” (for example to create a more or less formal essay) or the format. Cowriter acts directly on the text written inside the Notepad: it doesn’t matter if written from scratch, imported from other files or copied and pasted from any source.

The known leaker PhantomOcean3 spotted the news and he immediately gave an account of it (the image we republish below is his), specifying, however, that the integration between Notepad and Cowriter is still immature.

Il menu di Cowriter which you see on the right, in fact, is still hidden and the various commands still do not work correctly. The discovery, however, clearly shows how Microsoft intends to amalgamate all its applications – including those historically present in Windows – with tools based on artificial intelligence and, in particular, on generative models.

Furthermore, Cowriter can easily be used within Notepad only after logging in to a Microsoft account, exactly as happens for Paint Cocreator, the feature that allows you to generate images of quality using the DALL-E model.

How Cowriter works: a preview image released by Microsoft reveals it

Drawing on the content of a presentation recently shared by Microsoft, we discover what Cowriter will be like. Take a look at the image we republish below (source: Microsoft).

You can clearly see how Cowriter has completely rewritten the text highlighted by the user, providing an alternative, more well-argued and in-depth version. The text, in this case, is in English but – obviously – Cowriter will also support Europen.

The buttons at the bottom of the screen allow you to change the characteristics of the text, make substitutions, obtain different versions and so on.

Microsoft working on the next version of Windows: Hudson Valley

The imminent arrival of Cowriter represents further confirmation of the work that Microsoft is carrying out to arrive, in a short time, at the distribution of the next version of Windowsknown by the code name Hudson Valley. It is not known whether this is Windows 11 24H1, inadvertently revealed by Dell in recent days.

What is certain is that a release in April 2024 would be in line with Microsoft’s desire to propose an operating system Windows updatedwith AI-based features already part of the standard installation package.

In addition to the inclusion of AI functionality next-generation features, including an AI-powered Windows search and search mechanism chronology which aims to make it much easier to find previously opened apps, files and web pages, will also debut there Super Resolution at the operating system level. This is a feature that aims to improve resolution in video games using AI.
