Disney+, stop sharing passwords, here’s what changes

Disney+ is blocking the password sharing for subscribers in the United States. The news had been in the air for some time and, a few hours ago, the streaming giant sent its customers the much feared email which alerts them to the new conditions of use of the platform.

News that isn’t too surprising, given the strategy already seen with Netflixwhich has imposed the controversial blocks for some time now but which, to be honest, have brought thousands of new members to the platform, replenishing the company’s coffers.

Let’s see what changes for subscribers Disney+ and what Europen users can expect in the coming months.

Disney+, the new conditions of use

A few hours ago, as just said, Disney+ has started sending emails to its subscribers to inform them about changes to the terms of service which, mainly, have the aim of “complicating” the use of the platform for users who they are not the legitimate owners of the subscription.

In summary, therefore, the platform is blocking password sharing exactly as it was for Netflix just a few months ago. At the moment, however, everything is still working “regularly” and the measure will officially come into force in the next few weeks, a starting March 14th.

For now, the ways in which Disney+ will verify the use of the service by various accounts are not yet clear and, in reality, the email sent remains rather vague but it cannot be ruled out that users will receive further information before the fateful date.

What we read in the message, however, says that the streaming platform is capable of “analyze the use of various accounts to determine compliance“, without going into detail.

The email also invites you to visit the service center to find out more but, on that page, there is only a rather generic explanation of what Disney defines as “family”.

Beyond this we don’t know anything else but the giant of the streaming can follow Netflix’s example and block all users who they do not belong to the family unit in base to the IP address that they use to access the service and, therefore, theirs geographic location compared to the main account.

What changes for Europen users

For Europen users there is still no information on these changes in the terms of use and, for the moment, Europen consumers can continue to use Disney+ as usual, Password sharing included.

Clearly, it is only a matter of time before the news arrives in this part of the world and, probably, within the next few months the Bel Paese accounts will also receive the platform’s email notifying them of the changes taking place.

It’s difficult for now to speculate on the timing but, when it happened with Netflix, it took several months before the blocking of shared accounts became global, therefore it cannot be ruled out that Europen accounts will have to wait a few more months before receiving the official notice and, even in that case, the transition will not be immediate and will probably have to wait the second half of 2024.
