According to what is reported on the website of The Information, OpenAI is developing a new and disturbing software to take control of the PC and carry out complex tasks autonomously, without manual user intervention.
Apparently, the automated program would go to interact with installed apps, by clicking e moving the cursorwith settings manageable through textual inputs. This introduction could revolutionize the very concept of the operating system.
The project of Sam Altman expects to evolve ChatGPT transforming the chatbot in what is defined as a “super intelligent personal assistant”, although the very nature of this new technology could worry some users (as we will see later).
On the other hand, also Meta e Google they seem to intend to move in a similar way, proposing very similar alternatives to OpenAI’s future service. On a practical level, how should such a system work?
A clear example in this sense could be a request to the assistant to analyze a documentturn it into a spreadsheet and analyze/interact with the data present in it. All simply with a textual command and the subsequent operations physically carried out by the AI.
OpenAI is not only building this cyber control agent, but also one specifically for the online browsing. In short, the browser Web will be able to plan flights, collect company data, and other complex tasks that go beyond ChatGPT’s current capabilities.
OpenAI a little too intrusive?
If so far the OpenAI project seems appreciable, it must also be said that there is also another side of the coin.
Software capable of carrying out this type of interaction must be based on interoperability, therefore with a wide access to the device. In fact, OpenAI will have to have broad access to its computer. In a historical period that sees consumers’ attention on aspects such as privacy and securitythis type of concession seems rather difficult to metabolize.
Regarding the project, however, the company seems quite confident. Andrej Karpathy, founding member of OpenAI, went unbalanced by stating that soon we will no longer talk about LLM such as chatbots, and who considers these systems as “Kernel processes of an emerging operating system“.
