Download and install updated NVIDIA and AMD video card drivers

By updating the graphics drivers we will most of the time obtain an increase in speed with some contents (videos, 3D contents, etc.), an improvement in the management of Windows graphic effects and, as already mentioned, an increase in speed when we play video games on Steam or on any other platform.

1) Update from Windows

If we don’t use the computer to play games, we can update the video card driver using the Driver update system built into Windows. In this case the drivers will not be very recent, but sufficient to surf the Internet and manage Windows graphic effects.

To update the video card drivers with Windows, we right-click on the Start menu icon at the bottom left, press on the menu Device managementwe identify the video card in the category of the same name, we right-click on it and select the item Update drivers.

If there is a more recent version of the driver on the Microsoft server, the management software will download it and install it in place of the one already present.

This method is effective for both AMD and NVIDIA video cards, but can also be used on laptops or computers that have an integrated Intel video card (in another article like Download updated Intel HD Graphics Card Drivers).

2) New drivers for NVIDIA video cards

To obtain maximum performance with the NVIDIA video card installed on our laptop or on our desktop gaming PC, first of all we identify the model we have using a program like GPU-Zwhich gives us the name of the tab in use.

After having obtained the name of the video card, let’s go to the download site Updated NVIDIA driverindicate the card model in the available bulleted lists, make sure to download the version suitable for the operating system in use then click on the button Research.

On the next page we will be shown the version compatible with the card in use; let’s click Instant download to start the download. At the end we open the installer and choose whether to install only the driver or the driver accompanied by the program NVIDIA Geforce Experiencewhich provides personalized settings for each type of game, so as to always obtain the maximum quality and fluidity necessary to be able to play without wasting too much time with the game settings.

Once the configuration is complete, the actual installation of the driver will begin: in this phase we will not have to move anything and not open any program on the PC, since the interface could flicker or jump for a few seconds, the time needed to replace all the files that make up the driver. At the end of the installation, we restart the computer, so that the changes applied take effect and we can benefit from the new video driver.

3) New drivers for AMD video cards

If we have an AMD video card, we identify the card itself with the program GPU-Z already mentioned previously and, having obtained the name of the card, let’s go to the official website to download the Updated AMD driver.

Once the page is open we scroll until we find the list of various compatible AMD products and look for our video card in the section Graphics and highlighting the name of our product (which will be displayed in the subsequent tabs that open as we select a product category). If we have a video chip integrated inside the processor (for example on the new AMD Ryzen), we will have to download a specific driver, present in the section Processors with graphics.

Once we have identified our product, we click on Submit; on the next page, we expand the specific Windows entry and click the button Download present next to it.

For some video cards, a tool will be downloaded that can recognize the card and automatically download the right driver; in other cases the tool will be downloaded instead AMD Adrenalinwhich in addition to the updated driver also provides an advanced management program for the video card chip (to overclock or optimize performance in games).

This tool also allows you to keep the driver updated, notifying you of new updates when available.

To install the actual driver, we start the specific installer downloaded from the site, confirm all the various steps and, when finished, restart the system for the changes to take effect. As with NVIDIA, we recommend not doing anything during the update, so as to make the process as painless and as quick as possible.

4) Automatically update all drivers

If we want to always keep all the PC drivers updated (including video cards) it is best to use a program like Driver Boosteravailable for free.

The free version allows you to Manually scan your system and get the latest drivers for any peripheral or device connected to the PC; It also periodically shows a notification with the number of drivers that can be updated.

The program starts automatically together with the system, scans for updated drivers on its own and installs them, providing only a warning window when it is necessary to restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

The methods we have shown you are the only ones we need to use for update your video card drivers. We therefore avoid all unofficial sites, since they can also contain viruses and compromise the stability of our computers.

If the PC is really old, the driver provided by Windows should be sufficient to run a minimum of special effects on the system and to open web pages, otherwise we can use the automatic search programs recommended above.
