Google Messages: Will allow editing of messages after sending

After WhatsApp e iMessageAlso Google Messages could soon allow the editing messages even after these have been sent. As reported on the TheSpAnadroid website, in the code of a version beta dell’appdated November 19, 2023, the first references to this new function would appear, with quattro flag dedicate. Evidence of the in-development feature has surfaced as support for editing messages becomes more common in other messaging apps. Apple added the option for iMessage users to edit messages sent with iOS 16 last year and WhatsApp released a similar feature in early 2023. In both cases, you have a limited time to edit sent messages: two minutes per iMessage e 15 for WhatsApp. The two apps also allow you to delete sent messages. Unfortunately, this does not yet apply to Google Messages.

Google Messages: the four flags dedicated to editing SMS

As already mentioned, there are four flags present on the Google Messages beta: bugle.enable_edit_ui, bugle.load_edit_history, bugle.process_outgoing_edits e bugle.process_incoming_edits. The first indicates the enabling of aediting user interface for a message we want to edit. The second concerns the loading of the change history of messages from the message database. The third seems to concern theprocessing of the modified message once a user has modified it. Finally, the fourth flag indicates processing of the modified message for the user who is receiving it. Unfortunately, enabling these flags does nothing for now because this functionality still exists being processed.

To date, it is not clear how the functionality will be implemented on Google Messages. We don’t know if there will be a time limit for editing messages (like Apple and WhatsApp) or if a recipient will be able to see history of the changes. One snippet of code identified by TheSpAndroid (“original_rcs_messages_id”) suggests that it is possible that message editing could be added to the RCS standard (Rich Communications Services) because it works the same way as message reactions. To find out more, however, we will have to wait for any developments in the coming months.
