A recent update integrated in the section “Personal safety” introduced the ability to turn Google Pixels into dashcams. Will the feature also come to other Android devices? Here’s what it is and how it works.
The usage of dashcam to protect yourself while traveling by car has become increasingly widespread: it is, moreover, a very useful device for properly analyzing the dynamics of an accident in order to understand who is at fault and who will have to be compensated. The cameras made specifically for this use case, however, they can cost quite a bit and, for this reason, many users take advantage of them GoPro the alter action camera. Soon even Android smartphones could become usable as dashcams, as demonstrated by an update that has arrived on Google Pixel.
The smartphones of the Grande G have in fact received the update “dogfood” which pertains to the system function called Personal safety: This is a feature pack designed for detect accidents and protect the user while using the smartphone.
Among the available options, the item “Dashcam”: once opened, it allows the manual video recordingeven while your mobile device is locked or you are using it for browsing.
In the configuration phase it is possible to activate theautomatic start of recording the moment you connect your phone to the system infotainment of the car by selecting it among the many Bluetooth devices potentially present inside the vehicle.
I recorded videos with the Google Pixel in dashcam mode they weigh about 30 Megabytes for every minute and can last up to 24 hours. Each recording is automatically deleted after three days, unless you proceed with saving it.
At the time of writing, the dashcam functionality is only available on Google Pixel and still has some bugs; in other words, the future launch of the green robot on multiple smartphones is not guaranteed, but it cannot be excluded either.
As per practice, the US company first initiates a test phase, and then proceeds with the rollout widespread. If you want to try using your smartphone as a dashcam, therefore, you will still have to wait for an unspecified period of time.
