It’s now official: the IT Wallet, the digital wallet for storing personal documents, will soon be a reality. Last February 26, the Council of Ministers, with the approval of the Pnrr decree, established the Europen digital wallet systemestablishing how it will work, who will take care of it and what advantages citizens will experience by using it.
This means that there is less and less of the possibility of having your own IT wallet and all your most important personal documents always at hand via your smartphone or other compatible mobile device. However, before the new system is active, there are still a series of small steps that will be completed in the coming months.
IT Wallet, how it works
IT Wallet will be present in Europe in two declinations, one public and one private. In the first version, all documents that have legal value and which can be shown to the competent authorities if requested will be grouped and archived. There you can find, for example, all the documents necessary to pass checks at the airport, for car rental or to check in at a hotel.
In the public version of the IT Wallet we will therefore find documents like the identity card, the digital driving licensethe health card or other information.
The private version will contain all strictly personal documents which can only be accessed with the authorization of the Agency for Digital Europe. Regarding private services, a contribution may be required to use the IT Wallet. In its public declination it will be completely free.
The technological and organizational infrastructure was entrusted to the State Printing and Mint Institute and the PagoPa company. The digital wallet can be accessed through the IO app.
IT Wallet, the times needed for the official release
The IT Wallet, which will see the light well before the European digital wallet, could already be usable in the final months of 2024 or early 2025 and its release to all citizens will be preceded by an important testing phasenecessary to identify any critical issues in the system and to allow everyone to adapt to the new system.
The first documents that will be added to you will be the digital driving license, the health card and the European disability card. This passage it could already happen in August 2024. Subsequently, the experimentation will be started after which all citizens will be able to gain access to their digital wallet.
Per the archiving of other types of documents, like the qualification, you may have to wait a longer period of time. The timing will be clearly established with a second implementing decree which will be issued in the coming weeks.
