1) Dates available for Windows lifecycles

Microsoft provides two end of support dates for each operating system: supporto Mainstream ed supporto Extended.

The first date indicates the ordinary support window, where the system receives substantial updates with new functions and numerous monthly or extraordinary security patches; the second date instead indicates extended support, where the operating system does not receive new features in the future but provides for the release of only security patches (monthly and extraordinary).

This means that, after the extended support end datethe operating system will no longer be updated by Microsoft even on the security side, becoming in all respects a outdated and very insecure operating system (exposed to hackers and intrusions).

2) New Microsoft Lifecycle Policy

With Windows 10 and with Windows 11 they are Windows product lifecycles have also changed: Every major update (Major Update, usually yearly) is supported for one maximum limited period of 24 months from the release date (36 months in Enterprise editions).

Each release therefore has limited support for security and feature updates, forcing users to upgrade to the next version whenever it is available in order to keep updates and continue the lifecycle of the installed operating system.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC releases will continue to receive updates after this date: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 has a lifecycle of 5 years from the date of releasewhile IoT Enterprise LTSC continues to have a 10-year lifecycle from the release date.
