How to make Wi-Fi as fast as possible

How to make the Wi-Fi connection faster by working on the router, connection and Wi-Fi channel settings

Fast Wi-Fi PC When we talk about Fastest Wi-Fi possible we must not limit ourselves to using a certain Wi-Fi channel, but we must be sure that the wireless takes well to every corner of the house and that all the latest connection technologies are supported (such as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E).

In the following guide we have collected all the best tips to make Wi-Fi as fast as possible on PCwhatever room the computer is located in and whatever its form (desktop or laptop, including MacBook).

Before talking about what to do, I would still like to make a summary of what slows down your network speed (wifi or wired) and internet connection.
The speed of a wifi network is affectedessentially three things:
1) The internet providerwhich can be of poor quality or which arrives at our home from too far away (check internet coverage here)
2) He router it’s old or broken or misconfigured (see how to speed up your router to optimize wifi)
3) The signal it does not reach the PC or other devices well (see how to amplify the wifi signal).

Except for the first point on which we can’t do much (except change internet provider), for the other two factors we can certainly work to improve the speed of the network.

1) Router Wi-Fi moderno

We assume that not all modems provided by telephone operators support the latest technologies; in this scenario the best method we can apply for get the fastest wifi is to connect a new router to the main modem, turn off the modem’s Wi-Fi and keep only the router’s modem, thus surfing at the maximum speed possible.

We choose a latest generation routerslet’s connect it to the modem in our possession and configure the cascade correctly, as seen in the guides on how connect a new router to the modem without switching networks come on how to use the FRITZ!Box modem on an FTTH fiber optic network.

To learn more we can read our article if it is better to take the included Modem and better replace it.

2) Wi-Fi Mesh

Another very effective method to make Wi-Fi as fast as possible on a PC involves the use of a Wi-Fi Mesha network of devices that boost the Wi-Fi signal in every corner of the house, thus making the network fast whatever the position of the computer.

Lots of third party routers they support integration with Wi-Fi Mesh with specific repeaters, while other models must be connected via cable to the main modem and subsequently placed in the house to obtain maximum coverage and speed.

To learn more we can read our guides on how to bring Wi-Fi where it doesn’t work with Wi-Fi Mesh.

3) Wi-Fi repeater

The Wi-Fi repeater allows you to obtain an extension of the starting Wi-Fi network, whatever its origin (from the modem or router). On particularly large houses it could be one good alternative to Wi-Fi Meshalthough you need to place at least two to get good coverage.

Modern Wi-Fi Repeaters are very simple to set up and are ready to use, using the same Wi-Fi password as the main network they expand; to learn more, read our insights on how does the Wi-Fi repeater or Range Extender work and on best 5 GHz wifi boosters.

4) Powerline Wi-Fi

In particularly modern homes it is also possible to use the Wi-Fi Powerline, which brings the Wi-Fi signal to a single room using the Powerline signalwhich we recall uses electric cables to transport the signal.

With the Wi-Fi Powerline it is an excellent compromise if the PC room is the only one not covered well by the Wi-Fi, since we can use both the Ethernet cable to the Powerline and its Wi-Fi network to effectively connect any computer present.

To learn more, we can read our articles on how to bring the Internet to every floor and corner of the house come on how the Internet works on the electrical socket with the Powerline.

If we don’t know whether to use Powerline or Wi-Fi Mesh we can rely on our comparison article Powerline vs Mesh Wi-Fi: Which is more effective for extending your wifi network.

5) PC network configuration

In addition to configuring the Wi-Fi network, the PC in use must also be able to take advantage of the latest technologies that we are going to implement.

To make Wi-Fi as fast as possible on PCs, we recommend using the ones listed below as network adapters:

  • TP-Link Archer TX20U Plus WiFi 6 AX1800Mbps, Adattatore USB
  • Zyxel WiFi 6 USB stick AX1800: supports MU-MIMO, OFDMA
  • Tenda U18 AX1800 WiFi 6, USB 3.0 WiFi Adapter
  • TP-Link Archer TX20E PCIe Adattatore AX1800Mbps WiFi 6
  • ASUS PCE-AX1800 Internal Network Card WiFi 6, 802.11 a/b/g/n/AC/AX

The first three models are USB network adapters, to be used on laptops, MacBooks or desktop PCs; the last two models are internal PCIe cards, to be connected to the motherboards of desktop computers.

On this subject we can read our guides on how to add wifi to a desktop pc come on which USB Wifi card / antenna for the laptop.

Choice of wifi channel

The channel is the road through which wireless signal waves travel.
If too many waves emitted by different wifi routers were to travel along the canal road, they would cross each other, creating interference and slowdowns.
Those who live in the city and have many neighbors are probably using a wifi connection that passes through a crowded channel, which can suffer from interference and, therefore, slowness.
Changing the channel is therefore the most important configuration you can do to make a wifi network faster.

For more details on how channels work, I recommend reading the guide on how to avoid wifi interference from neighbors’ networks.
In summary, if you are using a 2.4GHz network, there are only three channels to choose from: 1, 6 and 11.
All the others are so close that they overlap and do not change the situation.
Any question of interference could be solved using the 5GHz network, which however is not available on all routers and which has the defect of having shorter waves, i.e. a less long and less widespread signal.

To know on which channel our wifi is working you can use an app like Wi-Fi Analyzer (available on Windows 10 and Android ) or another program for find the wireless channel of the wifi network with the strongest signalso you know not only which channel our network uses, but also the channels used by other wifi signals that may have interference.
In Wifi Analyzer, watch channels 1, 6 and 11 trying to figure out which is the least used, read which channel is recommended by the application and change the router channel to the freer one.
To change this setting, refer to the guide for accessing the router and router configuration options.
Generally on routers it is set automatically so it is advisable to change the option and set a fixed channel depending on which is the freest.

To find out if this change is effective and how much, you can measure internet speed before and after and make the comparison.

Conclusions

To get the fastest possible Wi-Fi on PC we will first have to create a first-rate wireless network with support for the latest protocols and new generation frequencies, so as to be able to effectively cover the whole house.

After fixing the house it is necessary upgrade your computer connection hardwareusing Wi-Fi adapters or internal Wi-Fi cards that support the protocol Wi-Fi 6 o Wi-Fi 6Ewhich we talked about in the guide to the differences between Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6.

To learn more, we can read our ai guides best Wi-Fi 6 Routers (IEEE 802.11ax) and at differences between Ethernet network and Wi-Fi network.
