How to mass delete emails on Gmail

Every day you receive numerous messages in your email inbox, sent by different senders. Some come from colleagues and superiors or concern one’s work and therefore must be kept for a long time, others are short communications from friends or family, newsletters, advertising messages, spam or other content that can be deleted. Those who use Gmail can delete emails which do not need to be stored with just a few clicks.

On Gmail you can massively delete all messageswithout making any differences, or select only those that have a characteristic in common, such as the sender, those already read or those that are part of the same folder.

The operation can quickly be performed either to the desktopaccessing Gmail by logging in on the official website of the service, or from mobilethrough the official application made available free of charge by Google.

  • 1. Gmail, how to delete all emails

    To massively delete emails, you need to log in to Gmail with your credentials. If you operate to the desktoponce you are on the home page of your email inbox, click on the selection square at the top of the screen.

    This will select all the emails in the Inbox section of your Gmail account. Click the trash can icon (Remove), which is located at the top of the screen. All emails will be quickly deleted, even those not yet read.

    The same operation can be repeated for each section of the email inbox: Starred, Postponed, Important, Sent, Drafts, Spam and other folders created by the user.

    Users who use the Gmail mobile application they must perform slightly different actions. Access the service with your credentials and click on the three horizontal lines next to the search bar. Select the folder you want to empty and hold down one of the messages inside.

    Click on the square next to the entry Select all and, subsequently, on the icon shaped like Basket (Delete). All selected messages are immediately deleted, regardless of whether they have been read. The procedure can be repeated for each folder in your mailboxof email Gmail.

  • 2. Gmail, how to delete only already read emails

    Massively deleting emails could lead to the loss of important messages. If you want to avoid this risk, you can proceed to deleting only emails already read.

    Da desktop, in Incoming mailclick on the down arrow next to the selection square and select Already read. All messages that have already been opened in the past are automatically selected.

    To delete them all, click the trash can icon (Remove). Only messages that have not yet been read will remain in the folder.

    In addition to those Already readother quick selection filters can be used: To read, Specials, Not specials, Everyone and Nobody.

    This can only be done from desktop. From the app you will have to manually select all the messages already read or, alternatively, select all the messages edand manually select those not yet read.

  • 3. Gmail, how to delete emails from a specific sender

    There are several ways to delete all messages from a specific sender. If you are using Gmail from desktopclick the search bar and enter the name of the person (or their email address) who sent the emails you want to delete. Select it from the proposed options.

    Click on the selection box to select all messages and press on the trash can icon (Remove). Filters can be applied to select only read, unread or starred messages.

    Alternatively, you can click All messages, in the left sidebar. Click on the From button and select, from the list in the drop-down menu, the sender whose messages you want to delete. Click on the selection box to select all messages or to apply specific filters and then on the icon Basket.

    On mobile the process is similar. You can select the desired sender by clicking on the search bar and by entering your name or email address. Press and hold on a message and then click Select all and the trash can icon.

    To take a second route, click on the three horizontal lines positioned at the top of the screen and tap on All messages. click on And, select the desired one from the names present or type one (or your email address) in the appropriate bar. Press and hold on a message and click Select all. Press on the icon Removerepresented by a basket.

  • 4. What happens to deleted emails

    All deleted messages end up in the section Basket of Gmail and they stay there for a long time 30 days before their definitive elimination. Until then they can be recovered and moved within the other folders.

    You can empty the trash before the 30 days have passed. From desktop, click on the entry Basket present in the left sidebar and then on the item Empty the Trash now. From mobile, click on the three horizontal lines and press up Basket. Click on Empty trash now.
