How to select the audience on Instagram and the recipients of posts, reels and stories

Instagram is one of most popular social platforms in the world. It allows you to share images and videos with friends, relatives, acquaintances and people who are all over the world. It offers numerous services to those who decide to register and great control over shared content, information and privacy.

The audience that can view what a user shares on the platform can be selected to the smallest detail by the creator himself. If you wonder how to hide posts or how to hide a story or other types of content, the answer is simple: it takes just a few clicks during the publishing process.

  • 1. Instagram, what can be published and the difference between the contents

    If initially it was meant only for sharing images and photographs, Instagram has evolved a lot over the years and today allows the publication of different types of content. Videos and photos can be shown to members of the social network, in the form of posts, reels and stories. These contents are very different from each other, in terms of characteristics and visibility.

    A first choice on the type of audience that can view the stories can be made through the privacy settings of your account and deciding who can access it and who can’t.

    If you opt for a public account anyone on Instagram and outside of Instagram can view your account information and shared posts, unless otherwise restricted when posting them.

    If you choose to have a private account, only approved followers can see what is being shared, including video content, images, photos, audios, hashtags, tags, places. The privacy of the account can be changed at any time it deems appropriate.

    At the time of creating the account, if the user is over 18 the profile is automatically made public.

    To intervene on the privacy of the account, tap on the profile picture bottom right and then on three horizontal bars top right. To select Settings and privacy and then click User privacy. Through the switch choose whether to set up a public account or a private account.

  • 3. How to hide a post and choose its audience

    The type of audience of your posts is directly defined by the type of account you have. If it’s a private account, the post will only be visible to your followers. To hide a post from certain users, you need to block them. In this way it will be impossible for them to interact with the contents and with the account in any way.

  • 4. How to choose the Reels audience

    The Reels audience can be set manually just before their release. Click on the button (+) located in the center of the screen and select the item Reels. Build the content through the tools made available to the user. click on Avanti.

    In the pre-share step, click Public. You can select Follower if you have a private account, in this case all users who follow the account will be able to view the content, or Everyone, in case of public account. Alternatively, you can choose to only show it to Closest friends. Under the headings Followers and Closest friends is shown the number of reachable users.

    Your settings will not affect the type of account you have.

  • 5. How to choose the audience of stories and how to hide a story

    You can select the audience for a story before publishing it. Click on the button (+), create the story using the tools made available by the platform. Proceed and in the window Share select the Closest friends if you want to reduce the visibility of the content.

    To hide a story from specific people click on your icon at the bottom right and on hamburger menu top right. Choose Settings and privacy and click Hide story and live video. Press up Hide story and live video to select people who are not allowed to view any type of stories posted from the account.
