iPhone does not ring

And iPhone suddenly stops ringing when we receive a call or a notification it’s a really big problem, even more so if the silence also extends to the alarm clocks and reminders that we had so carefully programmed on the phone.

1) Turn off silent mode

On iPhones, a physical button is available to quickly mute the phone ringer; this key is very useful for activating silent without turning on the iPhone but it can also be activated by mistake, leading us to believe that the iPhone is not ringing or ringing.

Before trying any other tricks in the guide let’s try moving the silent button, making the key no longer have the red background (as visible in theimage of the silent key).

After moving the key the phone sounds will be restored and it will be possible to hear the ringtone of the telephone when we receive callsas well as the preferred notification sound when we receive notifications.

2) Control the volumes of the iPhone

If the silent button is in the right position but the iPhone does not ring or play we must check the volumes associated with the system.

To proceed, let’s go to the app Settingswe press on Sounds and haptic feedback and check that the volume bar (under the section Ring volume and alerts) is at a level sufficient to produce an audible sound.

To prevent the side volume keys of the iPhone from also changing the volume of the ringtone and alerts, deactivate the switch next to the item Edit with keys; in this way the physical volume keys will allow you to change only the volume of the multimedia apps (audio and video playback), without affecting the volume of the iPhone ringtone.

3) Deactivate full immersion

Another mode that can generate an iPhone that doesn’t ring or ring is Full immersion, a customizable software do not disturb mode based on the usage scenario, as also seen in the guide on how mute notifications and calls automatically on iPhone.

Per deactivate full immersion mode we open the control center on the iPhone (by swiping down from the upper right corner or by swiping up from the center of the lower edge), press on Full immersion, Do not disturb or other ways to restore iPhone ringtone.

4) Disconnect Bluetooth devices

If we have connected Bluetooth devices to the iPhone (like headphones or earphones) they can ring instead of the phone speakers, making the phone sound silent.

In this specific case, just go to the menu Settings -> Bluetooth and disconnect the connected device; alternatively we can also simply turn off the Bluetooth device if it is not present next to us or on our head (in the case of headphones or earphones).

For problems related to Bluetooth, we advise you to read our guide on what to do if bluetooth won’t connect.

5) Mute unknown callers

Who does not want to receive commercial calls or from call centers often disables unknown numbers, so you can only receive calls from numbers in your phonebook.

However, if we forget that we have activated this function we will end up with an iPhone that does not ring or ring when we receive legitimate unknown calls (for example by the courier who wants to deliver the package to us).

To mute unknown callers, all we have to do is open the app Settingspress on the menu Telephoneopen the menu Mute unknown numbers and turn off the switch present.

In this case we can disable commercial calls by reading our guide on how recognize calls from Call Centers to block on iPhone.

6) Mute calls from other devices

Modern iPhones allow you to send calls to other Apple devices (such as i MacBook).

In rare cases this feature can block the phone from playing sounds, resulting in an iPhone that won’t ring or ring. To solve it, simply go to the path Settings -> Phone -> On other devices and turn off all the switches present.

7) Check custom ringtones

If we have set a custom ringtone for some contact the phone may not ring if we have deleted the music file associated with the ringtonemaking the phone silent when receiving calls from the contact in question.

To solve this problem we open the app Telephonewe press on Contactspress on the name of the contact with personalized ringtone, press up on Edit and restore the basic ringtone by pressing next to the item Ringtone and selecting the ringtone present under the section Of Default.

Unfortunately we will have to repeat the operation for each contact on which we have used the same personalized ringtone, since it is not possible to quickly restore the ringtone for all the contacts on which we have set a new ringtone.
