Intel Core Ultra: here are the new 14th generation SoCs

As pointed out by the company’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, Intel is strongly committed to supporting the artificial intelligence solutions that will conquer the market in a few years’ time. The launch of the Intel Core Ultra processors 14th generation, intended for modern notebooks.

14th Generation Core Ultra: Intel relies on NPU for artificial intelligence

The new chips from Intel are de facto SoC (System-on-a-Chip) which integrate – and this is the most important innovation already widely announced – one NPU (Neural Processing Unit). That is, a unit specialized in managing processing and workloads related toartificial intelligence.

The Core Ultra series is based on architecture Meteor Lakeannounced by Intel in September 2023. The Santa Clara company is playing the card ofenergy efficiency confirming the use of high-performance P cores and low-power E cores. The so-called LP (Low Power) E-core they really emphasize the focus on energy saving.

Alongside the use of the mechanism packaging Foverosthe Core Ultra range embraces the manufacturing process Intel 4. According to the technicians of the company led by Gelsinger, the leap forward is tangible: the Core Ultra 7 165H It features 25% lower power consumption than the previous generation Core i7-1370P.

The performance of the new chips, according to Intel

Intel also compared its Core Ultra 7 165H with the competing Ryzen 7 7840U, with its Core i7-1370P and with the Qualcomm 8cx Gen 3 SoC. The results, based on SPECrate*2017_int_base(n-copy) are those represented in the figure.

On the graphic side, the series Core Ultra H is based on Intel Arc: in this case, a chip like the Core Ultra 7 165H it would offer double the performance of the previous generation GPU (on Core i7-1370P processor).

The NPU has a computational power of up to 35 TeraFLOPSwhen combining the use of this unit with available CPU and GPU on-chip. To give a concrete example, according to Intel the new Core Ultra series allows you to perform LLM without difficulty (Large Language Model) LLama2-7B of Meta locally.

Core Ultra devices will be installed in the brand’s upcoming notebook models Asus, MSI, Samsung e Lenovo. The top of the range model, however, will be released later (in March 2024): it is theIntel Core Ultra 9.

Gaudi3: Intel’s AI accelerator

Alongside the Core Ultra, Intel will focus on Gaudi3, an artificial intelligence accelerator that aims to compete directly with the NVidia H100 and AMD MI300X. This is the third generation that the company has developed after the December 2019 acquisition of Havana Labs. According to the manufacturer, Gaudi3 would guarantee 4 times higher performance in FP16 (Floating Point 16-bit16-bit floating point representation) compared to the past generation.
