The next major update of the operating system of Apple’s flagship product, the iPhone, will only be announced in the summer, on the now traditional occasion WWDC. The Cupertino company is obviously already working on iOS 18 and, surprisingly, something would have already leaked out.
What the iOS 18 code reveals
Based on information obtained by the MacRumors editorial team, the iOS 18 code – currently known as Crystal – would count the first information on four unreleased smartphonesor rather those who will certainly make up the gamma iPhone 16. To be more precise, the devices would be the following:
- D47 – iPhone 16
- D48 – iPhone 16 Plus
- D93 – iPhone 16 Pro
- D94 – iPhone 16 Pro Max
In addition to the code names, what is interesting to come out of this leak is that, at least for the moment, there is no reference to the much talked about Ultra model, and that the next generation chip, which will surely be called A18it will be there engine of all new smartphonesnot just the Pro models.
It would be about a significant change of direction for Apple. In recent years, in fact, the Californian giant gave a new chip to the Pro models only. For the two basic models (Standard and Plus), however, the chip used the previous year.
Looking at the 2023 range, for example, the strategy was as follows:
- iPhone 15: A16 Bionic chip (from 2022, used on iPhone 14 Pro)
- iPhone 15 Pro: chip A17 Bionic (2023)
However, the following hypothesis should not be discarded, absolutely in line with what Tim Cook and his associates have done in recent years. To underline the differences between the four proposals, Apple could opt for alabel: Standard and Plus models would go with chip A18to the Pro and Pro Max ones instead A18 Pro processor.
Chip aside, the operating system code does not include any other noteworthy “clues”. In fact, the time is not yet ripe to uncover references of a certain weight today.
