Mail Tiscali doesn't work: what happens

Already since yesterday 25 January 2024, late in the evening, reports have been circulating: the Tiscali email boxes no longer work correctly and it is not possible to access them either from the Web or via client. At the time of writing, if you try to use the Tiscali email with a traditional mail client, capable of sharing messages received from the remote server, you obtain anomalous responses such as Account is temporarily unavailable or Authenticaton failed.

Mail Tiscali doesn't work

The problem occurs regardless of protocol used to access the Tiscali email box: IMAP or POP3. Trying to do the login from the Web interface, Tiscali Mail displays the following error: “System temporarily unavailable please try again later“.

The reasons for the problem that prevents access to the Tiscali email are still unclear

At the time of writing, Tiscali has not yet informed users of the causes of the problem and the resolution times.

Yet, the difficulties appear to be on a large scale (not therefore limited to a small number of users), as confirmed by the reports on DownDetector. On the other hand, it is possible to check the malfunction of the mail server Tiscali also via Email Server Test dotcom-monitor.

By setting the instrument screen as shown in the figure, you will see an error appear. Similarly, trying a connection via Telnet (for example telnet imap.tiscali.it 993), it will also fail: no response is received or the remote server does not accept sending the command USER to begin the authentication process.

The behavior is identical regardless, as we were saying, of the Tiscali mail servers used. On this page the telecommunications operator summarizes the parameters for configuring your email service.

What is the fate of the messages sent to Tiscali emails?

At the moment, trying to send email towards Tiscali accounts we have not yet received messages of the type “Mail Delivery Subsystem“. When sending a message, the sender and recipient’s email server interact to manage the transfer of the email. If a problem occurs during the delivery process, Mail Delivery Subsystem can generate an automatic notification message to inform the sender about the outcome of the delivery and the reason for the failure.

It is not known the fate of the emails sent to Tiscali emails during these hours of service downtime. Probably, they should be delivered a few hours late. Provided that the problem concerns exclusively the platform for accessing email accounts and not the mail transfer agent (MTA) of the operator as a whole.

However, the time that passes before aemail not delivered whether it is returned to the sender depends on the specific configuration of the recipient’s and sender’s email server. There is no standard time frame for all situations, and times can vary considerably. In general, email servers make several delivery attempts before returning a error message to the sender. These attempts can span several hours or days, depending on your email provider’s policies.
