Malware and IoT, concern is growing: cases quadruple

When it comes to technology and everyday life, PC e smartphone they represent only a small part of the devices we deal with.

In the context of products Internet of Things (IoT), in recent years, there has been a recent boom: an unmissable opportunity for cybercriminali. According to an analysis published by Zscaler ThreatLabzin the last year we have seen a 400% increase malware that targets these types of devices.

As reported by experts, they have been examined 850 device unique ones who, over the course of several months, have been involved in three trillion transactions. A sample which, therefore, is considered quite reliable. According to some estimates, by 2027 there will be a total of IoT devices more than 29 billion: a huge number considering that today they are “only” 16,7.

Zscaler’s tests highlighted how, in the period between January and June 2023, they were therefore reported and blocked around 300,000 attacks against IoT products. This represents a four-fold increase compared to the same period last year.

Alarming but not surprising data, given the volumes of users and money circulating through these devices. But what are the main dangers in the IoT world?

IoT increasingly at risk of malware: Zscaler data worries experts

Botnets are among the most active malware in this context Mirai e Gaffyt. Alone, these two malware constitute the 66% of active payloads in the sector.

Through the inclusion of devices in botnets, they are exploited for DDoS attacks, criminal actions that cause huge financial losses to companies around the world. Cybercriminals seem to be focusing on legacy vulnerabilitiestaking advantage of shortcomings especially in terms of updates.

Data in hand, the manufacturing industry is the favorite of cyber criminals, with the 52% of operations recorded and an unenviable average of 6,000 attacks weekly on monitored devices.

Interesting information to say the least is that which physically concerns which specific products are most at risk. We mainly talk about:

  • 3D printers
  • Geolocation tools
  • Industrial control devices
  • Automotive multimedia systems
  • Payment terminals.

In this regard, in addition to staying informed about the latest security trends, anyone who owns this type of device must maintain them updatedto avoid unpleasant surprises.
