Microsoft opens up to do-it-yourself Surface repairs: now you can buy replacement parts

Similar to what Apple did in 2022, Microsoft has made available for purchase replacement parts for your devices Surface. Aimed at those users who have a certain technical familiarity with notebooks, who know where to put their hands without causing damage, the initiative is currently exclusive to three markets: United States, Canada and France.

Microsoft: do-it-yourself repairs for the Surface are underway

Surface’s market share isn’t that high, but that doesn’t mean that this product line has little or nothing to offer users, quite the contrary. Microsoft’s proposal is very interesting and adapts to the most varied needs, even the more “intense” ones typical of professionals (photo and video editing, for example). The real problem with Surfaces is probably the prezzo, out of reach for many potential buyers who – in the end – opt for something else. But that’s another discussion.

The point is that, however reliable, Microsoft Surfaces are not eternal and some maintenance is often required. When the product is under warranty, you can contact the official Microsoft technical service, but the situation is different when quite a few years have passed since the purchase of the same. In this sense, a small step forward was made in December 2021, when Microsoft announced a partnership with iFixit precisely to provide more expert users with Surface repair kit.

With the latest announcement of the Redmond giant, it turns out that the situation it has evolved further, and for the better. Microsoft has communicated that spare parts for Surface devices are now purchasable through the Microsoft Store:

We are committed to providing what customers want and need in a premium device including versatility, performance, cutting-edge design, build quality and repairability. Our approach to repairability has been to expand options to enable customers to repair their devices in a safe and sustainable way.

As anticipated, at the moment the initiative is exclusive to the United States, Canada and France, but in the coming months it should also expand to other countries (including Europe?). Microsoft specifies that through its store it is possible to purchase spare parts for Surfaces that are no longer under warranty, but for the tools necessary for replacement, contact iFixit (which also provides more than detailed guides).
