Prevent your computer from accidentally shutting down

Accidental PC shutdown

At least once it will have happened to us that we accidentally turned off our desktop computer or laptop, perhaps by closing the lid of the notebook (without having saved the work done up to that moment!) or by accidentally pressing the Power button on the case.

It may also happen that the PC, left unattended in the hands of children or an unauthorized person, can be accidentally turned off from the Start menu or physical button, even though at that moment we were downloading a file or doing work that hadn’t yet been saved. For this eventuality or unexpected event, we can take all precautions to prevent the PC from being stopped without our consent.

1) How to hide the power button from Start

If the sudden shutdown problem is with the button Switch off present in the Start menu, we can “hide” it from view, thus making the PC more difficult to shut down if we don’t know a valid alternative.

To carry out this change to the system we open the Start menu, type regeditopen the Registry Editor and go to the following key (we can also copy it directly into the top bar):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Start\HidePowerButton

In the new screen let’s move to the right, double click on the string value e we change the value from 0 to 1; now we confirm, close the registry and restart the system for the changes to take effect.

Upon restart we will notice that the shutdown button within the Start menu will have disappeared, making it impossible to turn it off accidentally.

2) Deactivate the shutdown if you press the physical button

However, if we turn off the computer by mistake using the button Power on the desktop PC case or on the laptop body, we can prevent this behavior by opening the Start menu and searching for the item Changes the operations performed when closing the lid.

In the new window let’s move on to the item When the power button is pressed and set it to the voice Don’t intervene on both columns Battery operated e Powered by mains electricity.

By doing this we will never be able to turn off the PC by accident by accidentally pressing the Power button; for convenience we can also set it to sleep or hibernate, decidedly less aggressive than total shutdown. To learn more we can read the guide Computer sleep and hibernation: differences and usability.

3) Disable the shutdown if you close the notebook lid

On laptops it can be very useful set hibernation or sleep when we close the lidso as not to lose the work done up to that point.

To proceed, all we have to do is repeat the procedure seen in the previous chapter: open the Start menu, look for the item Changes the operations performed when closing the lid and this time we modify the fields next to the entry When the lid is closedsetting IberĂȘ o Suspension.

If, however, we want nothing to happen when we close the lid, just set the item Don’t interveneso that the PC is always on, whatever not recommended on laptops (especially if we carry them in bags, since they can overheat).

4) How to shut down your PC forcibly

Whatever trick you use to prevent your computer from accidentally shutting down we can still turn off the computers using one of the methods to shut down Windows.

The best method is undoubtedly the keyboard shortcut ALT+F4to be pressed on the desktop (without open apps): this will open a small power management window, where we can set Shut down the system and then press on OK to turn off the computer even without any active shutdown button.

Conclusions

Applying all the advice given to the letter we will be able to prevent the computer from accidentally shutting downespecially the PC is shared or we are very careless from this point of view. Obviously we do not take into consideration a sudden power blackout, as it is totally unpredictable: in this case it will turn off regardless of what we do, unless we have a UPS.
