Let there be hard times inside OpenAI is more than confirmed and given the recent departure of Sam Altman (and then the sudden step back), it is undeniable that the company is facing something big.
And despite all the uncertainties of the case, this “problem” seems to have a precise name: Project Q*.
There is little information about it but, from the first rumors, it would be a new and very powerful form of artificial intelligence which could radically disrupt the entire sector. Here’s what we know.
What we know about Project Q*
According to the news agency Reuters the elusive Project Q* would be precisely the cause of Altman’s dismissal on November 17th.
This project, although still top secret, would be something very ambitious e di extremely powerful which, according to sources within the company, it may have serious consequences for all humanity.
And precisely these sources would have shared with the press the information according to which several OpenAI staff researchers had sent a letter to the company’s top management to warn them of the potential threat represented by Progetto Q*.
This would be followed by the dismissal of Altman who, of course, was (and is again) in charge of the project.
Again according to what was shared by Reuters, the greatest concern would be due to the marketing of this new AI, without having adequately evaluated it the risks e the consequences for humanity.
Apart from this, Project Q* is said to be something revolutionary in the industry dell’generative artificial intelligence which could help creation of complex systemscompletely autonomous and potentially capable of surpassing humans in many areas, including advanced mathematical calculations.
Of course, current artificial intelligences are already capable of solve more or less complex calculationshowever, they limit themselves to applying the knowledge on the subject provided by man and producing results by exclusively following these formulas.
If the new model was able to go further and solve these problems not mechanically but following a logical reasoningthis could lead to a breakthrough in the industry, bringing AI to a level of awareness e di knowledge even deeper.
What future for Progetto Q*
The no longer so remote hypothesis of an AI capable of formulate logical reasoning and solving complex problems could be the next step in the evolution of synthetic intelligence.
For many it could represent the connecting link between the cars as we know them today and the manas intelligent and sentient creature.
Despite the warnings of a certain literary and cinematographic trend, it is clear that at the moment there are no conditions for evaluate artificial intelligence like a threat for humanity and, according to experts, all of them have already been put in place necessary countermeasures to avoid such an eventuality.
However, if Project Q* will really be able to solve problems of this magnitude and reason in such a way as human as possiblenothing would prevent him from bypassing such security measures or even justifying his violations in logical terms (for his survival).
In short, we are witnessing the classic paradox which, rightly, has alarmed scientists, frightened by the extent of these technological advances which, more than ever before, represent the most close to the human brainwith all the resulting consequences.
